Job Description:

Position: KHSC-KansasCOM Career Services Specialist

Reports To: Director of Student Affairs

Status: Exempt

Summary: As a member of the Student Affairs staff, the Career Services Specialist will primarily serve KansasCOM medical students in helping students to identify possible medical specialties, CV preparation, interview preparation, and residency application processes. The career counseling specialist will work in concert with other key student support positions such as learning specialists, therapists, faculty advisors, dean and chief academic officer, student services staff, and other administrators to assist students in identifying and pursuing their career opportunities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Utilize an in-depth understanding of the medical, health, and science industry to assist students in the exploration, selection, and applications process for graduate medical education and/or career paths.

  • Design and create a professional pipeline to the Kansas and Western Missouri/Eastern Kansas Bioscience community by leading all aspects of employer relations and student development.

  • Seek opportunities to build professional partnership with hiring managers within the State of Kansas.

  • Work directly with the KansasCOM faculty and administrative leadership to communicate employer expectations, identify skill gaps, and ensure career goals are consistent with the academic programs.

  • Regularly meet with students individually and as a group to map their medical school career path and help them develop a plan for realistic career opportunities.

  • Administer personality, achievement, aptitude, and interest inventories with students.

  • Utilize students’ academic achievement, exam scores, work background, and a variety of personality, achievement, aptitude, and interest inventories to conduct one-on-one career counseling sessions to develop career goals and graduate education plans.

  • Develop and conduct workshops and presentations related to career opportunities within medicine, job search strategies, application materials, interviewing, residency applications, and employer expectations.

  • Represent KHSC-KansasCOM favorably and in accordance with established values and expectations.

  • Perform other duties as assigned or directed to meet the goals and objectives of the organization

Supportive Functions:

  • Other administrative tasks (i.e., filing, preparing documentation).

  • Participate in developing department goals, objectives, and systems.

  • Actively participate in team and KansasCOM meetings.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree preferred and/or experience in higher/medical education valued.

  • Experience in higher education, career placement, human resources, medical research, and/or medical sciences preferred.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Excellent verbal & written communication skills.

  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

Physical Requirements:

  • Physical dexterity sufficient to use hands, arms, and shoulders repetitively to operate a keyboard and other office equipment, use a telephone, access file cabinets and other items stored at various levels, including overhead.

  • Ability to speak and hear well enough to communicate clearly and understandably with sufficient volume to ensure an accurate exchange of information in normal conversational distance, over the telephone, and in a group setting.

  • Ability to continuously operate a personal computer for extended periods of time (4 or more hours).

  • Mental acuity sufficient to collect and interpret data, evaluate, reason, define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, make valid judgments and decisions.
