Position Description:

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Texas State University, a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), invites applications for a tenured/tenure-track position in literacy education. The positions will be filled at the Assistant Professor or Associate Professor level. We seek candidates who share our commitment to educational equity, justice, and to the development of high-quality educators of students from communities marginalized by systemic inequalities. We seek candidates who are qualified and committed to serving in an HSI, including contributing to campus and classroom environments that affirm of the lived experiences of BIPOC and other minoritized students and disrupt deficit-oriented views of learning and teaching.

Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate elementary education courses in reading, literacy education and related content areas, and developing and publishing research in a sustained line of inquiry. We are particularly interested in recruiting individuals whose scholarly interests are at the intersection of literacy and equity in PK-12 schooling and community settings. Examples of these types of scholarly interests include, but are not limited to the study of racial literacy, the politics of language, multilingual literacies, queer literacies, combatting anti-Black linguistic racism, transnational literacies, critical media literacy, and decolonizing school libraries. Other responsibilities include monitoring and refining degree programs, supporting student recruitment efforts, and providing service to the program, department, university and the professional community. Texas State University holds a Carnegie Classification of Doctoral University–Higher Research Activity and is engaged in a strategic plan to attain eligibility for the State of Texas’ National Research University Fund. Texas State University is an HSI of 38,000 students located along the ancient and sacred San Marcos River in San Marcos, Texas, a linguistically diverse city midway between Austin and San Antonio. The university also has a campus in Round Rock, Texas, just north of Austin.

The mission of the Department of C&I is to teach and care for its students in culturally sustaining ways towards preparing them to be culturally responsive education professionals who are knowledgeable about and effective in meeting the diverse needs of society and students in PK-20 settings. Through school and community partnerships, the Department seeks to advance research-based inquiry, theoretical frameworks and instructional approaches that influence practice and policy. We seek a dynamic, innovative scholar who merits appointment as Assistant Professor or Associate Professor. The successful applicant will receive the appropriate rank and title based on university and department established standards. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. The successful candidate will be headquartered at the university’s campus in San Marcos and will teach courses, as needed, at both the San Marcos and Round Rock campuses.

Required Qualifications:

Assistant Professor Rank:

• Earned doctorate in literacy education or related field from an accredited institution of higher education by hire date.
• Record of, or demonstrated potential for, excellence in scholarly activity in the field of literacy education with an emphasis on literacy and equity as evidenced by publications, presentations, grants, etc.
• Record of experience working with communities marginalized by systemic inequities.
• Record of at least three years of literacy teaching experience in schools (ECE through 12th grade).
• Record of, or demonstrated potential for, commitment to advancing justice, diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-oppressive initiatives in service of education (ECE-12, Higher Education, direct work with communities, or community organizations).

Associate Professor Rank:

• Earned doctorate in literacy education or related field from an accredited institution of higher education.
• Record of excellence in scholarly activity in the field of literacy education with an emphasis on literacy and equity as evidenced by publications, presentations, grants, etc. commensurate with rank.
• Record of experience in working with communities marginalized by systemic inequities.
• Demonstration of excellence in teaching at the university level.
• Record of at least three years of literacy teaching experience in schools (ECE through 12th grade).
• Record of commitment to advancing justice, diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-oppressive initiatives in service of education (ECE-12, Higher Education, direct work with communities, or community organizations).

To be eligible for hire at the associate professor rank, the candidate must meet the requirements for that rank as established by the department. The successful applicant will receive the appropriate rank and title based on University and department established standards.

Preferred Qualifications:

Assistant Professor Rank:

• Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to issues of justice, equity, and access.
• Knowledge of research on culturally sustaining literacy practices.
• Potential for success in implementing culturally sustainable support of a diverse student body and for preparing those students to be successful in implementing culturally sustaining pedagogies and practice.
• Knowledge of research and practice on culturally and linguistically responsive literacy assessment.
• Teaching experience in culturally and linguistically diverse populations.
• Teaching experience or demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching methods courses in university settings.
• Reading Specialist Certification in Texas.

Associate Professor Rank:

• Evidence of research and practice related to issues of justice, equity, and access.
• Knowledge of research on culturally sustaining literacy practices.
• Potential for success in implementing culturally sustainable support of a diverse student body and for preparing those students to be successful in implementing culturally sustaining pedagogies and practice.
• Knowledge of research and practice on culturally and linguistically responsive literacy assessment.

• Evidence of leadership in service at the department, college, university and/or professional level.
• Demonstrated record of external funding.
• Demonstrated excellence in teaching education methods courses in university settings.
