About IALS & CPHM

Institute for Applied Life Sciences (IALS) was established in 2014, based on a total investment of more than $150 million from the Massachusetts Life Science Center (MLSC) and the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The vision for IALS is to translate fundamental research into innovative product candidates, technologies, and services that deliver benefits to human health and well-being. IALS has more than 30 Core Facilities – that facilitate a wide range of projects, from device prototyping, precision manufacturing and roll-to-roll fabrication, to human motion and gait studies, calorimetry, magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy, as well as, EEG and sleep studies. These facilities are equally accessible to faculty members across the UMass Amherst campus.

One of the three core centers of the IALS is the Center for Personalized Health Monitoring (CPHM), which focuses on accelerating the development and commercialization of low-cost, multi-function, wearable, wireless sensor systems for personalized health care and biometric monitoring. Through collaboration, the CPHM aims to establish a robust, vertically integrated ecosystem enabling rapid design, prototyping, and human interface testing under real-world conditions. The center iterates sensor development from concept through validation, to advanced manufacturing of flexible sensor platforms. In addition, the CPHM provides an industry collaborative facility wherein industry can work directly with CPHM staff and researchers to develop and validate next generation health monitoring technologies and products.
