Boston University invites applications for several faculty positions at the associate (tenured) and assistant (tenure-track) levels as part of a 3-year cluster hiring initiative covering foundational, methodological, and use-inspired dimensions of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Led by the Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences, this initiative is pursued in collaboration with the departments of Computer Science (CS), Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE), and Mathematics & Statistics (Math/Stats). Qualifications required of all applicants include a PhD in any of the disciplines that span computing and data sciences; a strong record of research; a demonstrated capacity for interdisciplinary collaboration; and a commitment to innovative teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels.

Founded in 2019, the Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences (CDS) at Boston University (BU) is a university-wide, degree-granting academic unit that augments and complements the traditional cognate disciplines of computer science, computer engineering, and statistics by laying the foundation for innovation-driven, civic-minded computing to maximize the real-world impact of its research, curricular, and co-curricular programs. Supporting its undergraduate and PhD programs, CDS has 11 core faculty members and 32 secondary and affiliated faculty members who are drawn from across the landscape of disciplines at BU. CDS is housed in the top five floors of an iconic 19-story building with a convention-bending design that also houses the CS and Math departments, the Hariri Institute for Computing, and state-of-the-art classrooms, labs, and collaboration spaces. Additional information about the computing landscape at BU is available at: https://www.bu.edu/cds-faculty/explore/.

BU expects excellence in teaching and in research, and is committed to building a culturally, racially, and ethnically diverse scholarly community, which is essential to its mission. BU is an AAU institution with a rich tradition of inclusion and social justice. We are proud of our record, including being the first American university to award a PhD to a woman and the university from which Martin Luther King Jr. received his PhD. We are dedicated to increasing participation of all talented students, especially women and other underrepresented groups in Computing and Data Sciences.

Required Skills

All candidates pursuing research at the nexus of computing and data sciences will be considered. Candidates from underrepresented groups and candidates working in one or more of the following dimensions of Data Science, Machine Learning, and AI are encouraged to apply:

(1) Foundations. Foundational research in the theoretical underpinnings of AI methodologies at the nexus of algorithms, logic, information theory, optimization, and statistics, including the exploration of connections between machine learning and topics such as causal inference, uncertainty quantification, and statistical physics.

(2) Methodologies. General purpose supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement machine learning methods and platforms of broad applicability, including Deep Neural Networks, Federated Learning, Natural Language Processing, Large Language Models, Multimodal Machine Learning, and Artificial General Intelligence.

(3) Use-Inspired. Research in data science, machine learning and AI, which is inspired by and/or address unique challenges in domains beyond computing and IT, including scientific machine learning, analysis of complex systems, cognitive neuroscience, sociotechnical platforms, AI-driven decision systems, Explainable AI, and Human Computer Interaction.

DO NOT APPLY THROUGH THE BOSTON UNIVERSITY HR WEBSITE.

Qualified faculty candidates are invited to submit their applications through the web portal at https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/22966. Consideration and review of applications for appointment in one of the academic units participating in this initiative (CDS, CS, and Math/Stats) will start on November 1, 2022 and will continue on a rolling basis until April 15, 2023.

The Difference Is Our DNA

What compelled the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to award Boston University a grant to fight newborn mortality in Zambia? Why did Martin Luther King, Jr. adopt BU as a place where he could hone his message of justice and equality? And what is the catalyst that prompts 32,557 students from 135 countries to call BU their home every semester? It’s in our DNA: an inherent desire in each of our students, faculty, and staff to vigorously and dauntlessly pursue knowledge—and embrace the unlimited possibilities that come with it.

A Community Unlike Any Other

As you can see below, it takes people, ideas, and a little luck (Boston, you’re our town) to make BU what it is today: one of the most dynamic universities in the world.

Celebrated thinkers: On any given day, students will find themselves mesmerized by Nobel Prize winners, a poet laureate, and the first biomedical engineer ever to receive a MacArthur Foundation “Genius Award,” among others.

Extraordinary teaching: When a classroom starts to percolate with new ideas, it’s because our faculty of scholars and accomplished practitioners know how to ignite students’ imaginations. That’s why we reward our best teachers with BU’s most prestigious honor: The Metcalf Cup and Prize.

Groundbreaking research: With faculty dedicated to a creative, interdisciplinary approach to problem solving, BU has become a leading global research institution—propelled forward by over $350 million a year in sponsored program revenue.

World-class students: Elite students from all 50 states and 135 countries pursue higher education on BU campuses in Boston and at programs in L.A., D.C., and more than 30 other cities on six continents.

A city within a city: Today, 80% of our undergrads live on campus, which could explain the 525 student activity groups alone.

The greatest college town in the world: Boston. ’Nuff said.
