  Drew University is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor of 18th and 19th century U. S. history and its Atlantic World context in the undergraduate College of Liberal Arts History Department.


Key Responsibilities:

Primary responsibilities include teaching, research, student advising and engaging in service activities for the History department and University. The standard teaching load is three courses per semester.

    Teach an introductory-level course on the history of the United States, from contact to 1877Teach an intermediate-level course on African American history, from African origins to 1877Teach an intermediate- or upper-level course on Atlantic World historyTeach courses at the intermediate- and upper-level that relate to the successful candidate’s researchWork collaboratively with faculty across the university whose research and teaching are concerned with related fields such as Africa and the African diaspora, Early modern to modern world, Social and cultural identity formationActively produce scholarship in the 18th and 19th century U.S. history and its Atlantic World context


Required Qualifications:

A Ph.D. in 18th and 19th century U.S. history with a focus on Atlantic World history, or a Ph.D. in Atlantic World history with a focus on 18th and 19th century U.S. history is required. Teaching experience in the above areas is preferred.


Desired Skills and Experience:

We seek candidates who have breadth in the study of 18th and 19th century United States history and its Atlantic World context, and who are passionate about innovative teaching within a liberal arts context. The successful candidate must be able to teach undergraduate courses in the period on U.S. history, African American history, the U.S. in Atlantic World context, and historical research methods. There will be opportunities to teach graduate courses in Drew’s interdisciplinary M.A. Program in History and Culture, corresponding to the needs of the undergraduate department. In addition to excellent teaching, candidates will be expected to maintain an active program of scholarship, broadly defined, and to contribute to the university community through mentoring and advising students, co-curricular planning, collaboration across disciplines, committee service, and leadership at Drew.
