INTRODUCTION

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at the University of Connecticut is pleased to announce a search for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Environmental Engineering. We encourage applications from a broad range of teaching and research interests, including those that work at the interface of environmental and infrastructure management and policy. Applicants with research interests that complement existing areas of strength in hydroclimatic extremes, ecosystem health, brownfield redevelopment, water quality and water reuse, or that apply advanced tools such as artificial intelligence to environmental engineering applications are desired. This position has the opportunity to align with strong research centers such as the Eversource Energy Center, Human Rights Institute, Center for Environmental Science and Engineering, and/or to enhance the development of emerging research strengths in engineering education and environmental justice to facilitate cross-disciplinary research in sustainability and the environment. The successful candidate is expected to form strong collaborations with existing faculty within and outside CEE and establish and sustain a creative research and education program.

The candidates are expected to contribute to the educational mission of the Department and teaching innovation. The candidate must demonstrate the ability to teach environmental engineering and design courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels and support departmental initiatives in inclusive teaching. Professional registration as an Environmental Engineer or have the qualifications to obtain Professional Engineering (PE) licensure within five years of appointment will be considered a significant strength.

The successful candidate will share a deep commitment to effective instruction at the undergraduate level, development of innovative courses and mentoring of students in research, outreach and professional development. The successful candidate will also be expected to broaden participation among members of under-represented groups; demonstrate through their teaching, possible research, and/or public engagement the richness of diversity in the learning experience; integrate multicultural experiences into instructional methods and research tools; and provide leadership in developing pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Completion of all requirements for a Ph.D. in environmental engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, or a related discipline by the time of appointment (equivalent foreign degrees are acceptable).
  2. Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching; ability to teach environmental engineering courses.
  3. Demonstrated potential in establishing and undertaking successful research and scholarship.
  4. Demonstrated deep commitment to promoting diversity through academic and research programs.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Professional Engineering license or the ability and intent to obtain licensure within five years.
  2. Undergraduate degree in an environmental, chemical, civil, or related engineering discipline.
  3. Outstanding record of research and scholarship excellence.
  4. Demonstration of effective teaching and integrating contemporary pedagogy into instruction.
  5. The ability to effectivity communicate and a record of public engagement.
  6. Demonstrated experience promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  7. The ability to pursue collaborative opportunities with current faculty.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track position with an anticipated start date of August 23, 2023. The successful candidate’s primary academic appointment will be at the Storrs campus. Faculty may also be asked to teach at one of UConn’s regional campuses as part of their ordinary workload. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
