The Humanities Department at San José State University seeks an Assistant Professor for a full-time, tenure-line position in its Liberal Studies Teacher Prep B.A. Program.
The Humanities Department is a prominent center for creative, interdisciplinary study and research on campus. The Department offers three B.A. Programs: a Liberal Studies Teacher Preparation B.A.; a Creative Arts B.A.; and a Humanities B.A., in which students pursue a concentration in American Studies, Liberal Arts, or Comparative Religious Studies. The Department is also home to two team-taught General Education Programs: the lower-division American Cultures GE sequence and the Humanities Honors Program, which has both lower and upper-division Humanities Honors GE courses. Our faculty across all programs are experts in social and cultural foundations of education and philosophy of education as well as in American studies, environmental humanities, digital humanities, global humanities, comparative religious studies, global indigenous cultures, genocide studies and social justice, and the interdisciplinary arts.

- Doctor of Philosophy or Doctor of Education with a specialization in Social Cultural Foundations of Education
- Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching, and other comparable experience.
- Applicants should have a promising research agenda that will lead to publication within their field
Priority will be given to candidates who possess one or more of the following:
- Experience teaching/working with multiple subject teacher preparation programs in a university setting
- Experience teaching/working in Grades TK-8 in schools characterized by cultural, racial, academic, and linguistic diversity
- Experience with differentiation and other pedagogical strategies that support racially, culturally, academically, and linguistically diverse student populations
- Demonstrated advising and/or supervision skills
- Research expertise and experience in critical multicultural education, social justice, educational equity, and multilingualism and/or use of intersectional approaches to issues of race, class, sexism, gender, and sexuality in education
- Proficiency teaching in Spanish or other languages, such as Mandarin or Vietnamese
- Teaching General Education and pre-professional courses in which students gain field experience, learn theories of education, and are exposed to various narratives and histories of education, including education and inequality in the US, as well as other courses in the Humanities Department
- Pursuing an active research career in one’s area(s) of specialization
- Advising students in the Liberal Studies Teacher Preparation BA Programs
- Collaborating with the Multiple Subject Credential and Special Education Credential programs in the College of Education
- The candidate will participate in shared governance, usually in department, college, and university committees and other service assignments.
- The candidate must demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.
