Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia invites applications for a non-tenure-track Visiting Instructor or Visiting Assistant Professor of Economics. Position and Qualifications

Hollins University’s economics program has consistently succeeded in helping economics majors and minors gain admission to first-rate graduate programs and rewarding employment opportunities. Program faculty offer a rigorous, pluralistic, and nurturing learning environment by supporting inquiry and student research from introductory-level courses through the capstone senior theses in economics. Economics majors present research from their undergraduate economics theses at student symposia and state and regional professional conferences. Economics majors and minors often pursue a dual major in mathematics with a concentration in data science.

Program faculty strive to foster an environment of excellence in classroom instruction, close student mentoring, and undergraduate research. Department faculty take pride in leading or sponsoring student experiential learning opportunities, including study-travel, internship opportunities, attending regional conferences and symposia with their students, and working closely with Hollins’ Center for Career Development and Life Design to help students identify other learning and work opportunities.

The economics program attracts a growing number of students from diverse backgrounds, including international and first-generation students. Hollins is one of the nation’s most dynamic and diverse women’s colleges with an undergraduate student population that includes 32% US-American students of color, 36% Pell-eligible students, 32% first-generation college students, and 8% international students.

We invite candidates with a Ph.D. in economics or a related field to apply for this position. The position carries a teaching load of six courses per academic year (three undergraduate courses per regular semester). A.B.D. candidates are also encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will be able to teach principles of macroeconomics (one section per semester) in addition to two or more courses from the following: intermediate macroeconomics, money credit and banking, public finance, international trade, and economic development. The successful candidate may also teach one course in their area of expertise. A strong candidate will be a scholar with college-level teaching experience and a commitment to teaching excellence in the liberal arts and women’s education. Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate interest or experience working with first-generation students and students from underrepresented groups.
