Position Summary

Excellent candidates are sought in strong growth areas in the core of modern statistical/probabilistic theory and methods. The successful candidate will have demonstrated the ability to carry out cutting edge research, commitments to teaching and mentorship of students, and initiative in building an equitable and diverse scholarly and instructional environment. All scholars working in mathematical statistics, applied probability or statistical-theory-driven methodology development, grounded in scientific applications, either directly or with clear implications for application, are encouraged to apply. Potential areas of application include, but are not limited to, the environmental sciences and climate change, genetic/genomic data analysis, image analysis, machine learning, precision medicine and health outcomes, physics and astronomy, and the agricultural sciences.

Required Degree

Doctorate -Statistics or in a closely allied discipline

Minimum Requirements

A doctorate in statistics or in a closely allied discipline is required. In addition to a strong and compelling research program, candidates are expected to provide evidence or potential for high quality teaching in undergraduate and graduate level statistics courses.

Required Application Materials

We request that applications include:

(1) a 1-page cover letter that frames the application in the context of this ad and MSU’s Statistics and Probability Department and addresses the candidate’s qualification.

(2) a CV, including education background, a list of publications, contributed and invited talks, teaching and mentoring experiences/roles, and contributions to the academic community.

(3) a 2–6 page research statement highlighting past research accomplishments and future plans

that frame the applicant’s ability to conduct independent research. This statement should include

experience or plans to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion within the statistics research community.

(4) a 1-2 page teaching statement describing the applicant’s experience in instruction and research mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students, including experiences or plans to create an inclusive and equitable learning environment for students.

(5) 4 letters of reference. Three of these letters should address the applicant’s research while one letter should address the applicant’s instructional experience.
