Scope of Job:
We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley's diverse student body as an Assistant Professor for the Department of History beginning in the 2023-2024 academic year. The ideal candidate will have an active research agenda and will be able to teach introductory, upper-division, and graduate-level courses in Mexican American and Texas history.

Preference will be given to applicants who have a minimum of one year's experience teaching at an institution of higher education. Applicants must have a PhD from an accredited university in hand by the time of appointment. Competitive candidates will be able to demonstrate an active research agenda, will provide evidence of teaching effectiveness, and will have or demonstrate an interest in developing both face-to-face and online course delivery. UTRGV is a distributed campus on the north bank of the Rio Grande with major sites in Brownsville and Edinburg. The successful candidate for this search will be appointed to the Brownsville site.

Minimum Qualifications:
The minimum qualifications to be considered as a tenure track Assistant Professor is a Ph.D. degree in History or a related field of study with at least 18 hours of graduate coursework in History from an accredited institution of higher education. ABDs will be considered, but a conferred doctorate by August 31, 2023 is required for appointment

Discipline Specific Required Qualifications:
Evidence of a strong research agenda; demonstrated potential for teaching excellence with innovative course delivery.

Additional Information:
UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days inlength.

A New University with a Long History

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 in a historic move that brings together the resources and assets of UT Brownsville and UT Pan American and, for the first time, makes it possible for residents of the Rio Grande Valley to benefit from the Permanent University Fund—a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and the Texas A&M University System.

 

Our new university will also be home to a School of Medicine and will transform Texas and the nation by becoming a leader in student success, teaching, research, and health care. UTRGV will enroll its first class in the fall of 2015, and the School of Medicine will open in 2016.

 

UT Brownsville and UT Pan American

The shared history of The University of Texas Pan American and The University of Texas at Brownsville goes back to 1927, when Edinburg College was founded. In 1973, Pan American opened a second campus in Brownsville, which later became an independent institution of The University of Texas System in 1991. Over the years, the missions and the identities of these great institutions have continually evolved to serve the communities of the Rio Grande Valley.

Now, the evolution and connection between these two institutions is coming full circle as UT Brownsville and UT Pan American are being established as a single, new university and medical school, with a single, new identity—The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
