We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley's
diverse student body as an Assistant Professor for the Department of History beginning in the 2023-2024 academic year.
The successful candidate should demonstrate potential for scholarship in the field and possess teaching experience at the college level. Applicants should be able to contribute to the award winning Community Historical Archaeology Project with Schools (CHAPS) Program (https://www.utrgv.edu/chaps/index.htm
) and the recently developed undergraduate Public Heritage program curriculum (http://utrgv.smartcatalogiq.com/2022-2023/Undergraduate-Catalog/Undergraduate-Programs-by-College/College-of-Liberal-Arts/School-of-Interdisciplinary-Programs-and-Community-Engagement/Public-Heritage-and-Community-Engagement-Bilingual-Bicultural-Border-Heritage-Concentration-Bachelor-of-Arts
) and expand our professional development initiatives at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Individual research emphasis is open, but the CHAPS and public heritage programs put significant emphasis on place-based learning, which could emphasize our location on the US-Mexico border, or encompass both conceptual and comparative borderlands in a global context. As an integral part of a liberal arts education, history courses introduce students to different historical eras, diverse cultures, famous and ordinary women and men, and a variety of geographical settings. Our courses challenge students to think critically, express themselves clearly, and become informed and responsible citizens in an increasingly interconnected world. The Department of History offers courses in historical methodology, research, world regions, and themes of the human experience. Faculty members engage in research among an international community of peers and share that knowledge in publications and with students. The minimum qualifications to be considered as a tenure track Assistant Professor is a Ph.D. degree in History or a related field of study with at least 18 hours of graduate coursework in History from an accredited institution of higher education. ABDs will be considered, but a conferred doctorate by August 31, 2023 is required for appointment.
Discipline Specific Required Qualifications:
Experience in community organizations, state, local, and federal historical agencies, historic preservation associations, museums, digital humanities, and/or private historical contracting is desired.
Competitive candidates will be able to demonstrate an active research agenda, will provide evidence of teaching effectiveness, and will have or demonstrate an interest in developing both face-to-face and online course delivery.

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days inlength.
Texas law requires faculty members whose primary language is not English to demonstrate proficiency in English as determined by a satisfactory paper-based test score of 500 (computer-based of 173 or internet-based of 61) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or a satisfactory test score of 6.0 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
