Description
San Diego State University School of Music and Dance seeks to hire a tenure-track Director of Jazz Studies at the rank of Assistant Professor for a Fall 2023 appointment.

Primary responsibilities for the position include chairing the jazz studies area; overseeing all jazz course offerings, degree programs, and SDSU jazz ensembles and combos (program selection, scheduling, and administering); assisting with student recruiting, advising, and coordinating all guest artist visits. Teaching assignments will be within the undergraduate/graduate jazz curriculum, including undergraduate/graduate level courses in jazz theory, arranging/composition and/or improvisation.

Additionally, the successful candidate will develop and maintain a local and regional profile within the profession, develop and maintain contacts with regional teachers, school systems, and professional organizations, and keep up to date with stylistic and pedagogical developments in the field.


Qualifications
Masters degree required, terminal degree preferred (or the equivalent in professional experience by the appointment date). The successful candidate must demonstrate advanced skills in jazz pedagogy within both rehearsal and classroom settings. The candidate should also possess excellent interpersonal skills for working with a diverse student population and a dynamic faculty. Evidence of university and community collaborations is strongly desired.

  • Ability to work with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and/or socioeconomic backgrounds;
  • Demonstrated accomplishment as a performer;
  • Documented experience teaching in higher education;
  • Evidence of successful student recruitment;
  • An ongoing commitment to advancing the profession as reflected in the realms of both performance and pedagogy.

SDSU School of Music and Dance:

The SDSU Jazz Studies program has a rich history, featuring a BM degree consisting of courses in jazz elements, jazz history, arranging/composition, graduate seminars, and outstanding performing ensembles including two big bands and multiple jazz combos. Program facilities include a fully equipped recording studio for use by faculty and students and large rehearsal spaces. Students and ensembles have toured and been recognized internationally.

The School of Music and Dance (SM&D), which offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in music (B.A., B.M., M.A., M.M., Advanced Graduate Artist Diploma) and dance (B.A., B.F.A.). The School enrolls over 325 majors and serves thousands of students across our campus each academic year through its general education courses, performing ensembles, and public performances. To deliver our comprehensive curricula, the School has 21 permanent faculty (tenured or tenure-track), 38 lecturer faculty (mostly part-time), and approximately 13 studio instructors.
