Your opportunity:

The Department of Statistical Sciences is one of the top ten statistics departments in North America, with our faculty developing numerous important innovations in statistical science. Our mission is to serve as a centre of excellence for statistical and actuarial research and education, across the campus, nationally and internationally. Research is centered on excellence in theory and methods, as many faculty members in the department have very successful collaborative research programs. Central to our vision for the next five years is to strengthen our national and international reputation in collaborative scientific activity, without compromising our core strengths.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Implements digital communication plans across a broad range of marketing/communication channels.
  • Oversees tasks related to the production and dissemination of communications/marketing materials.
  • Builds and strengthens relationships with stakeholders and partners of strategic importance.
  • Plans, produces and coordinates the preparation and distribution of promotional/outreach materials.
  • Produces promotional and outreach materials.
  • Creates, and maintains communication templates.
  • Coordinates interactions between faculty, staff, students, employers, alumni, and the wider community to develop, coordinate and implement all work relating to communications. This involves creating, maintaining and updating the content, look and feel of the Department's online presence and associated websites, including social media presence; and the design and implementation of the Department's various communication activities, initiatives and achievements.
  • Identifies opportunities and maximizes communication outreach, nationally and internationally on research, grant applications and awards, alumni and development, student programs, outreach initiatives and employer and internship opportunities.
  • Writes and coordinates the publication of newsletters, as well as news, articles, press releases, and blog posts for written publication and for the Department's website including social media platforms.
  • Researches and recommends story ideas that advance priorities and initiatives; conducts interviews, for example, with faculty, researchers, students, alumni and donors, employers and industrial partners for the purpose of writing news and articles; and develops design layouts.
  • Supports the faculty with the writing of grant applications; maintains statistical reports relating to media hits and website analytics; monitors and reports on he effectiveness of the Department's communication initiatives and makes recommendations for improved communication strategies.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree, preferably in communication, or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum four years of recent and related experience in planning and preparing communication content, design and production of publications and newsletters, promotional material and website content and maintenance.
  • Experience implementing digital communication plans across a broad range of marketing/communication channels.
  • Experience in developing, co-ordinating and implementing creative communication initiatives, preferably in a non-profit or an academic environment.
  • Experience writing and editing content for publication and promotion, design layout, production and distribution in hardcopy, electronic format and on websites.
  • Experience in delivering high-quality communications content in a range of formats. Experience with Content Management Systems.
  • Experience in managing a wide range of web publishing and communications tools (e.g. blogs, social media, email newsletters, etc.) Proven journalistic experience, including investigating and pitching stories, executing interviews with academic researchers, students, alumni and donors, employers and other groups of related interest, and writing news and feature stories.
  • Experience identifying opportunities maximizing communication, nationally and internationally on research, alumni and development opportunities, student programs and recruitment, and other related outreach initiatives.
  • Experience in supporting the faculty with the writing of grant applications.
  • Experience in developing marketing and promotional material for events, student programs, alumni and employer outreach initiatives.
  • Experience with tracking communication metrics and website analytics and preparing statistical reports and evaluating and enhancing communication initiatives.
  • Advance skills in desktop publishing software, word processing software, email and internet software, HTML, and website design and maintenance.
  • Demonstrated advanced skills in MS Office (Microsoft, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook). Skilled in the use of Adobe Creative Suites (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Dreamweaver and other related systems), Wordpress and Drupal and/or similar content management systems.
  • Exceptional proofreading and editing skills with working knowledge of graphics design principles for website and print communication.
  • Proven journalistic skills, including investigating and pitching stories, and executing interviews and writing news and feature stories.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Excellent organizational ability and interpersonal skills. Excellent problem solving skills.
  • Must have high level of demonstrated initiative and diplomatic skills.
