Departmental Overview

UC Berkeley's University Health Services (UHS) is a comprehensive campus-based health center providing fully accredited, primary care, counseling and psychological services, and innovative health promotion programs for students, faculty and staff. The UHS provides on-campus medical and mental health care and coordinates supplemental needs for off-campus care through a network of community specialists and hospitals. The Clinical Services Program within the UHS includes urgent care clinics, general medical and specialty clinics, laboratory, pharmacy, physical therapy, radiology and a major insurance plan covering Berkeley students. Clinical Services Administration (CSA) consists of managers and supervisors from various program areas, an administrative director, and administrative support staff.

Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Clinical Laboratory Manager or Supervisor, the Clinical Laboratory Technologist performs phlebotomy, reception, clerical, technical, assisting, specimen processing and specimen testing for the UHS Clinical Laboratory to assure the highest level of patient care and customer satisfaction. The Clinical Laboratory Technologist provides direct patient care and analytical assessment. S/he performs administrative duties related to quality control, quality assurance, and policy and procedures. The Clinical Laboratory Technologist performs the full range of laboratory testing on a regular basis with appropriate quality control activities and oversees procedures performed by the Laboratory Assistant. Patient confidentiality in all verbal and written communications is essential. The employee must be professional, flexible and have the ability to multitask. Frequent use of a computer is necessary. The Per-Diem technologist must be able to communicate anticipated availability with regards to future scheduling and must be available a sufficient amount of time to adequately perform tasks according to UHS lab protocol. The Per-Diem technologist must have availability to UHS for a minimum of 2 days/ month (including one weekend shift) unless previously agreed upon arrangements are made with the supervisor.

SPECIFIC DUTIES INCLUDE:
Specimen Procurement and Processing (10%) Judges appropriateness of specimens in correlation with orders, judges quality of specimens and rejects those not acceptable, and handles specimens according to procedures. Performs the duties of the Lab Assistant / Phlebotomist as required. Test Performance (70%) Performs a variety of non-standardized and standardized clinical laboratory tests requiring professional judgment and experience. Provides technical consultation to clinical and other laboratory staff. Monitors test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure that acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained. Monitors procedures and certifies tests performed by the lab assistant after appropriate review of quality control and test results. Assures that all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the UHS lab performance specifications and that patient results are not released until the system is functioning correctly. Assists in the assessment of new procedures / methods and the implementation of new techniques, equipment, and technology as appropriate. Routinely performs and documents preventive maintenance, proficiency testing, quality control records, test worksheets and initiates actions as appropriate. Other Duties (20%) - Performs other duties as assigned, which may include but are not limited to: Training other personnel. Evaluating methods and procedures. Performing specimen preparation and processing. Maintain, inventory, distribute and order supplies and reagents. Evaluate patient results and correlate with other departments if indicated. Perform and document proficiency testing. Participate actively on UHS committees as assigned. Communication Demonstrates effective and positive communications. Requests and accepts feedback. Demonstrates courteous and service-oriented behavior at all times when interacting with patients, families and UHS staff. Respects and guards confidentiality with patients and other staff members. Identifies potential interpersonal conflict and intervenes to promote resolution of conflict; deals with conflict on a one-to-one basis. Attends appropriate staff meetings and keeps abreast of current issues when not able to attend. Actively participates in discussion of problem identification and resolution. Promotes effective and collaborative interdepartmental relationships. Professional Standards Demonstrates responsibility and accountability for own practice and follows Universal Precautions. Respect the rights of others. Establishes effective working relationships with other members of the health care team, patients and families. Demonstrates flexibility, accepts assignments willingly and discusses concerns with the supervisor. Share knowledge in a constructive manner. Maintains attendance and follows call-in policy as per UHS guidelines.
Required Qualifications
    Current Clinical Laboratory Scientist license issued by the State of California. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Basic computer skills and experience. Excellent organizational skills. Detail oriented with the ability to follow written and oral instruction. Excellent customer service and people skills. Experience working with diverse individuals and lifestyles.
