Job Description

SUMMARY:

Under the direction and leadership of an assigned supervisor, assists in the implementation of assistive technology throughout the campus; serves as a liaison between faculty, administration, campus computing facilities, and Accessibility Resource Center (ARC); and provides technical assistance and support to faculty and staff in regard to the use of alternate media and assistive computer technology to meet campus accessibility needs; increase accessibility for media, technology, and related programs surrounding materials and enhancing learning.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Install, configure, and maintain college-wide access technology.
  • Survey the current access technology needs of the campus and assist in developing a campus access technology plan. Participate in campus instructional and technology committees.
  • Provide training and technical assistance to faculty and staff in the design and redesign of educational and informational media to ensure that the California Community College Chancellor's Office access guidelines are met.
  • Serve as a resource to external agencies and campus entities concerning access technology. Participate on Alternate Media list serves.
  • Research and assist in evaluating new access software that may be suitable for implementation on campus.
  • Scan print media using Optical Character Recognition software and transcribe it to e-text for alternative forms of output (large print, braille, audio recording, etc.).
  • Produce alternate media in a variety of media formats that will enable students with disabilities access to the instructional material and services provided by the college, including but not limited to, the production of alternate print material such as e-text, large print, and braille. Develop, implement, evaluate and revise alternate media formats as necessary for ADA compliance.
  • Advise on the development and implementation of processes to meet institutional brailling and captioning needs, including methods for providing educational and informational materials in alternate formats.
  • Create and promote a positive and supportive college-wide instructional climate for students with disabilities who use assistive technology by providing assistance to faculty and staff in diagnosing and resolving problems associated with supported services.
  • Monitor activities (analysis, specification, testing, training and documentation) associated with system enhancements and new systems development efforts to ensure they are accessible to people that use access technology.
  • Develop and maintain a resource bank of access strategies for various types of disabilities and related instructional alternative media and adaptive technology (e.g., distance learning, Internet, tele-courses, and e-text), including an organizational system for tracking progress and availability of alternate media produced.
  • Conduct needs assessments and make recommendations concerning the computer needs of DSPS and other student services offices; serve as a technical resource to student services programs.
  • Maintain department website.
  • Install or assist in the installation of software.
  • Troubleshoot any problems that may arise in the area of alternate media.


SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:
  • Comply with state and program reporting requirements.
  • Provide District in-service training programs.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

  • Web media access strategies for persons with disabilities.
  • Universal Design Principles in web and print media.
  • Distance education development and practices for persons with disabilities.
  • Methods, equipment, and materials used in the installation and maintenance of microcomputers, peripheral equipment and software.
  • Access strategies for various types of electronic information, including distance education, web pages, and general computer technology.
  • Technical aspects of the field of specialty.
  • Methods and materials used in computer interfacing.
  • Operation of computers and peripheral equipment.
  • Principles and practices of training and providing work direction.
  • Assistive hardware and software for people with disabilities.
  • Techniques for designing and modifying instructional and informational media to make them electronically accessible to people with disabilities.
  • Pertinent legislation and regulations relevant to information access for people with disabilities (e.g., Americans with Disabilities Act, Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act and Title V regulations governing Disabled Students Program and Services, etc.)
  • Resources available for production of alternate media for people with disabilities.


ABILITY TO:
  • Install, maintain, and troubleshoot microcomputer systems and peripheral equipment.
  • Troubleshoot computer software and hardware problems relative to the production of alternate media.
  • Operate a variety of machines including computers and peripheral equipment.
  • Communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and students, orally and in writing.
  • Maintain currency of qualifications for area of assignment.
  • Understand and implement guidelines for producing accessible electronic media.
  • Meet schedules and timelines.
  • Assist in identifying student concerns and problems and identify available alternatives for problem resolution.
  • Resolve problems in an efficient, effective and timely manner.
  • Plan and organize work.
  • Prepare and maintain a variety of records and reports.
  • Train and provide work direction to others.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Understand and implement guidelines for producing accessible electronic media.
  • Be sensitive to and understand the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
  • Accurately assess the state of the college in regard to access needs concerning the curriculum, distance education, and all types of electronic and non-electronic sources of information.
  • Train faculty and staff in the use of assistive technology and alternative media in educational environments.
  • Follow departmental policies and procedures.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to: Bachelor's degree in computer science or information systems; and two years increasingly responsible experience in installing and maintaining standard and assistive hardware, software, and peripheral equipment; evidence of successful experience in training people to use microcomputer systems and software.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Lab or other indoor environment; subject to lifting, climbing, and possible exposure to electrical hazards.
