Position description

The lab of Professor Jill Banfield in Earth & Planetary Science at UC Berkeley invites applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar to work on developing targeted DNA editing technologies in model cyanobacterial communities with the goal of dissecting microbial community interactions as part of a larger team involving Jennifer Doudna and three new IGI investigators Spencer Diamond, Brady Cress, and Benjamin Rubin. This project aims to: i) use established model cyanobacterial communities to identify community features (e.g. genes, metabolic pathways, and microbial interactions) that influence community collective behavior, ii) expand molecular biology toolsets developed at the Innovative Genomics Institute for targeted genetic editing in microbial communities into these cyanobacterial systems. To accomplish these goals, the project will leverage multi-Omics approaches and novel CRISPR-Cas based editing and delivery systems. This position reports to Professor Jill Banfield in Earth & Planetary Science and will be working at the Innovative Genomics Institute at UC Berkeley.

Responsibilities

The Banfield lab is seeking a motivated Postdoctoral Scholar interested in working in a highly collaborative team that will undertake this project. This postdoc will primarily be responsible for performing multi-Omics experiments on established cyanobacterial consortia under different environmental perturbations to identify microbe-microbe interactions important for perturbation responses. Additionally, the postdoc will be responsible for the design and application of novel CRISPR-Cas based targeted editing tools within this system. It is expected that the hire will have professional communication skills and be able to regularly report progress to and interact with the team lead. Mentorship and support will be provided for the duration of the project, which will include assistance with downstream informatics analysis.
