Position Summary

The Department of Physics has eleven full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty and one technical staff. The Department offers a Master of Sciences degree in Physics, a Master of Arts in Physics, a Master in Medical Physics, a Major in Chemical Physics with the B.A. in Applied Arts and Sciences, a Major in Physics with the B.A. degree in liberal arts and sciences, a Major in Physics with the B.S. degree in applied arts and sciences, Teaching major in physical science for the single subject teaching credential in science/physical science.

The Instructional Support Technician III is expected to be in charge of all the freshman Physics labs in the fall and spring semesters. This position involves supervision of approximately 40-47 sections (~21 TAs) each semester that include the 182A, 182B, 195L, 196L and 197L labs. The incumbent has to assign TAs to each section, train new TAs, set up and take down the labs, monitor TA performance, and cover for absent TAs. In addition, the incumbent is in charge of updating lab manuals, setting up demonstrations, testing out new experiments that will be integrated into future labs, identifying replacement and new equipment for the labs as well as undertaking some equipment repairs and modifications.

This is for a full-time, permanent (probationary) position. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

This position is physically located at the SDSU Main Campus in San Diego.

Minimum Qualifications

(The minimum level of education and experience required to perform the job. Please note that for staff positions, generally, the minimum qualifications listed in the CSU Classification and Qualification Standards are used.)

Equivalent to four years of experience providing instructional support services for a related unit or discipline, or in producing materials or supplies or repairing equipment in a discipline related to specialty area to which assigned.

or

Equivalent to two years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the area to which assigned may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

or

Equivalent to four years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the specialty area to which assigned may be substituted for two years of the required experience.

Specialized Skills Required

  • Knowledge of the principles of performing support services

  • Knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques related to the discipline and the curriculum

  • Knowledge of the materials and supplies in the curriculum and the curriculum and their uses

  • Ability to plan, organize, and schedule activities

  • Ability to operate technical equipment related to the discipline

  • Ability to maintain records

  • Ability to adjust and perform simple maintenance of technical and scientific equipment

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $5,000 per month.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,583-$7,950 per month.

SDSU Vaccine Policy

In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. Individuals are considered fully vaccinated for five months after their final dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine or for two months after receiving the only dose of a single-dose vaccine. Afterward a COVID-19 booster is required to continue to be considered fully vaccinated.

The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university's secure online health portal prior to beginning work. Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU's COVID-19 testing program.
