Georgetown University: Main Campus: Walsh School of Foreign Service: Georgetown University in Qatar

Location: Qatar
Open Date: Sep 27, 2022
Deadline: Nov 15, 2022 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time

Description
Georgetown University in Qatar invites applications for a full-time non-core faculty position as Teaching Professor in the Science for All Program. This position is open rank and will be hired at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level. The position starts in August 2023. We seek an enthusiastic scientist to develop and teach science courses to non-science majors as part of the “Science for All” core curriculum courses for undergraduate students majoring in the social sciences and humanities. The courses must emphasize interdisciplinary approaches to environmental problems, global health, international security, or related topics at the intersection of science, technology and international affairs. Examples include climate change, contaminants and biodiversity loss, or nuclear energy and security. The courses must be anchored in the natural sciences, that is, biology, chemistry, physics, geosciences, or neuroscience, and may also include perspectives from history, philosophy, and sociology of science and technology. These courses are specifically designed to illustrate, in the context of the natural sciences, how scientific understanding is developed, tested, and revised. As with all of Georgetown's core curriculum, SFA courses should help students connect the subject matter of the course to broader contexts such as ethical and social issues.

The initial academic appointment is for a 3-year term, and is renewable. The teaching load for teaching faculty is 3-3.

The ideal candidate should have a Ph.D. in physics, chemistry, biology, geosciences, neuroscience, or environmental sciences with an additional focus on the implications of science andtechnology for international affairs; demonstrated excellence in teaching; and a genuine interest in effectively communicating science to a diverse population of undergraduate students. The successful candidate will be able to teach three distinct undergraduate science requirement courses per academic year and a total of six courses per year. Ability to teach courses in more than one discipline will be an advantage.
