Summary of Job Duties and Responsibilities:

The University Fire Marshal and Hazardous Materials Coordinator is responsible for fire prevention and training, fire suppression systems, fire extinguisher inspection and maintenance, life safety inspections, emergency evacuation planning and building code compliance. The Coordinator is responsible for managing and overseeing compliance of state and federal environmental regulations related to hazardous waste and be able to communicate program requirements to users of hazardous materials on campus.

  • Direct the inspection, testing, maintenance and certification of all fire alarm and sprinkler systems, hood suppression systems and specialized detection/suppression systems
  • Manage the inspection, testing, servicing and inventory of 1,300 fire extinguishers
  • Perform fire and life-safety code inspections on all university buildings including satellite campuses
  • Coordinate with Facilities Management, Building Coordinators, Housing and Food Service staff to ensure buildings remain in substantial compliance with the fire and life-safety codes at all times
  • Conduct fire safety training and extinguisher training for university employees and students
  • Coordinate fire evacuation and disaster drills in the Residential Colleges
  • Develop and implement life-safety and fire-prevention awareness education programs
  • Coordinate and manage building fire watches and maintain written records
  • On call to respond to and assist in fire investigations, analysis, and mitigation
  • Maintain all state inspection reports, fire drill records and equipment maintenance records
  • Act as a liaison with the State Fire Marshal’s Office and local fire departments
  • Design and update building emergency evacuation plans, pre-fire plans, emergency operations procedures and related signage
  • Assist in the project management of new installations of life safety equipment and systems
  • Coordinate with Procurement Services to analyze bids for price contracts for the regular inspection and service of fire alarm systems, sprinkler systems and fire extinguishers
  • Interview, train, supervise and mentor student interns/workers
  • Provide technical guidance in the development, implementation and administration of the university’s Hazardous Waste Disposal policy and the Campus Hazardous Waste Communications Program.
  • Supervise the weekly collection and transportation of hazardous waste from each of the university satellite collection points
  • Responsible for training hazardous waste generators and technicians in the proper identification, classification, labeling, storage and handling of hazardous waste
  • Ensure wastes are properly labeled and stored in compliance with both state and federal EPA regulations (OSHA 1910.1200) and the Campus Hazard Communication Program.
  • Maintain detailed records of all hazardous waste generated by the university
  • Maintain and update Material Safety Data sheets for all chemicals on campus
  • Responsible for conducting weekly inspections of the Chemical Waste Storage Building
  • Assist in the process of laboratory decommissioning
  • Act as a liaison with the Environmental Protection Agency, the Kentucky Department for Environmental Protection and the City of Murray Public Works
  • Responsible for annual renewal of the university’s “Certification of Registration” with the EPA
  • Compile and submit the “Annual Report” to the KY EPA (KRS 224.46-510)
  • Coordinate with a hazardous waste disposal firm for the removal of waste from campus at least semi-annually and complete the “Uniform” Hazardous Waste Manifest” in accordance with 401 KAR 32:100

Minimum Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Fire Science, Occupational Safety and Health or in a closely related field, such as Fire Protection, or Criminal Justice.

Minimum Experience and Skill Requirements:

  • Must have at least one year of experience and thorough knowledge in the areas of fire detection and suppression systems, fire safety, building codes, Occupational Safety and Health Administration and other federal and state regulations and reporting laws.
  • Must possess a working knowledge of state and federal environmental regulations and be able to communicate program requirements to users of hazardous materials on campus.
  • Must be detail oriented and have excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • A working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Access, Excel, and PowerPoint required.

Preferred Education and/or Experience Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Occupational Safety & Health or a closely related field is preferred.

Work Hours:

  • Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and unscheduled incident responses is required.
