Description:

The University of Oklahoma invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Music Theory in the School of Music, College of Fine Arts.

General

  • Teach undergraduate courses and graduate seminars (2+2 load) to music majors.
  • Advise MM theses and serve on MM and doctoral (DMA and PhD) committees, as needed.
  • Collaborate with the theory area in all departmental activities, and serve on various committees as assigned by the Director of the OU School of Music.

Specific

  • Teach a semester of our core undergraduate curriculum, counterpoint (upper-level undergraduate), analysis of 20th-/21st-century music, and one graduate seminar per year on a topic pertaining to the candidate's expertise.

Qualifications:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Earned Ph.D. in Music Theory or equivalent degree, such as a Ph.D. in Musicology with a theory concentration or a Ph.D. or D.M.A. in Music Studies with a theory concentration.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Record of scholarly accomplishments: publications and presentations at conferences.
  • We welcome candidates who research areas that complement the interests of the existing faculty. Examples include but are not limited to jazz, popular music, musical theater, indigenous and world musics, music and media, aural-skills pedagogy, music cognition, and history of music theory.
  • Put broadly, we seek a versatile scholar-teacher who can build bridges between traditional and contemporary musics, or between conventional theory and cutting-edge approaches.
  • Evidence of teaching experience in music theory.
