Job Summary


This position is located in a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Global Monitoring Laboratory (GML) federal facility located in Boulder, Colorado.

Lead/technician for the NOAA/GML Observatory Operations Division Meteorology program. The GML meteorology technician is responsible for logistics, maintenance, and operation of the meteorology network to support GML science, inform the public, and continue the long-term meteorology database from the GML observatories. The meteorology technician will be responsible for maintaining the observatory equipment, analyzing data, training observatory personnel, and interacting with GML and cooperative scientists.

The NOAA/GML conducts research that addresses three major challenges: greenhouse gas and carbon cycle feedbacks, changes in clouds, aerosols, and surface radiation, and recovery of stratospheric ozone. The NOAA/GML Observatory Operations Division operates four atmospheric baseline observatories, located in remote areas to measure well-mixed air, far from sources of pollution. Data are used by NOAA and globally to understand how the atmosphere is changing over time.


What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Operate and maintain the meteorology network at 6 different locations (Greenland, Alaska, Colorado, Hawaii, American Samoa, Antarctica).
  • Provide hardware, software and network support related to remote meteorological systems.
  • Configure, interconnect, troubleshoot, and ensure the reliable operation of remote communication equipment.
  • Collaborate with network engineers and scientists to maintain a reliable flow of data for the end users.
  • Conduct regular site visits to complete installation, maintenance, calibration, and service to temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, and wind sensors.
  • Train new field personnel in the operation and maintenance of meteorology instrumentation.
  • Use programming skills to program Campbell Scientific data loggers and write scripts for internal data transfer and management. Works closely with GML IT staff.
  • Manage incoming meteorological data, completes quality control measures, and publishes data to NOAA/GML’s website.
  • Conduct and publish analyses of meteorological data - internal and externally.
  • Answer questions from users about data.


What You Should Know

  • If selected for this position, the finalist will have to pass a federal clearance investigation for site access.
  • Work is often performed alone and independently under general supervision. It may include other duties as assigned by the Director of Observatories.
  • Travel <25%. Travel includes site visits to remote locations with extreme conditions (Arctic/Antarctic, tropics).
  • Must be able to travel to 12,000 ft asl, work in extreme cold conditions, work in extreme heat, and pass a National Science Foundation physical to deploy to remote locations, including Antarctica and Summit, Greenland.
  • Must be able to climb a 40m instrument tower and work on instrumentation.

What We Can Offer

  • CIRES offers a generous compensation package.
  • The annual hiring salary range for this position is $55,000 - $95,000. Salary is commensurate with education and experience and determined based on our CIRES internal career track classification.
  • Relocation funds are available for this position following CIRES and the University of Colorado’s relocation processes and procedures.
  • This position can accommodate a hybrid work environment.

What We Require

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Atmospheric Science, Mechanical or electrical engineering, or related physical science fields.
  • Basic computer programming experience - work with and program scientific data loggers.
  • Experience troubleshooting and repairing electronics and scientific instrumentation.
  • Understanding of meteorological processes and patterns to complete data quality control and processing.
  • Remote field operations experience preferred.
  • Must be able to travel to 12,000 ft asl, work in extreme cold conditions, work in extreme heat, and pass a National Science Foundation physical to deploy to remote locations, including Antarctica and Summit, Greenland.
  • Must be able to climb a 40m instrument tower and work on instrumentation.


What You Will Need

  • Understanding of meteorological processes and patterns to complete data quality control and processing.
  • Proficient in soldering, using hand tools, and basic electronics troubleshooting.
  • Proficient in using design tools and basic instrument fabrication.
  • Proficient in the configuration of Linux and Windows operating systems.
  • Basic understanding of computer networking including hardware and software related to remote connections to data loggers and computers.
  • Must work as a member of a diverse team: works closely with NOAA and Observatory staff, network engineers and affiliated specialists in the office and the field.
  • Must be able to work well independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills - mostly working with researchers and technicians from afar.
  • Must be willing to contribute to an inclusive, diverse, and collaborative work environment.
