Description:

A full-time Professional Research Assistant (PRA) or Senior PRA position is available in bioinformatics and statistical genomics at the University of Colorado Denver and Anschutz Medical Campus. The PRA will assist in both data analysis and method development work to support ongoing projects in the research lab of Dr. Audrey Hendricks as well as general management of lab activities. Management activities include scheduling of team and individual meetings, communication and reminders within the team, and helping to develop and improve team organization and structure. Research activities include the design of new studies, data cleaning, wrangling, and association testing, maintenance of current pipelines, development of new pipelines, collaboration with other teams and consortia, and preparation of abstracts, oral and poster presentations, scientific manuscripts, and research grants. Current projects consist of, but are not limited to, development and application of methods to increase the utility and equity of summary genomic data. This position may be ideal for individuals who are considering future academic programs (e.g., PhD) or are interested in gaining research experience.

Duties:
  1. Management, Quality Control of Large Genomic Datasets: Procure and process publicly available genomic data adhering to all data consent standards. Implement existing and new data management and QC pipelines. Manage timelines for all data processing and inform PI of expected completion and any changes to the timeline Maintain records and large databases for research projects.
  2. Development and Application of Statistical Methods: Interface with GitHub and Bioconductor to maintain code repository and packages. Analyze real and simulated genomic, metabolomic, and other ‘omics data. Communicate these analyses with collaborators and research team members independently and under the supervision of the PI. Produce figures and slides for publication of results, presentations, and grant applications.
  3. Research Team Management: Orient, train, and give work direction to less experience professoinals. Maintain communication with PI, postdocs, graduate students, and interns for upcoming needs, scheduling, and budgeting. Act as point of contact for vendors and technicians.

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range for this position has been established at $37,000 - $76,000 at the PRA level or $49,000-$100,000 at the Senior PRA level.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

PRA:
  • B.S./B.A. degree or above in statistics, biostatistics, computer science, data science, mathematics, biology, human genetics, molecular cellular biology or related field.
  • Minimum of two years' experience in statistics, mathematics, data science, or machine-learning.
  • Minimum of two years' programing experience and experience using R, python, and/or bash scripting in a Linux environment.

Senior PRA:
  • M.S./M.A. degree or above in statistics, biostatistics, computer science, mathematics, biology, human genetics, molecular cellular biology or related field.
  • Minimum of three years' experience in working in statistics, mathematics, data science, or machine-learning.
  • Minimum of three years' programing experience and experience using R, python, and/or bash scripting in a Linux environment.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience using Microsoft Word, Access, PowerPoint & Excel.
  • Experience in the preparation of written documents, including procedures, presentations, proposals and scientific papers.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
    Knowledge of scientific principles and concepts of high-throughput genetic and genomic studies. Outstanding written and verbal communication skills. Independent, innovative, and creative thinker. Effective process and project management skills (e.g., attention to details, diligence in data recording/documentation, adherence to reproducible coding and research, strong organizational skills). Willingness to learn new statistical methods and innovative scientific strategies is essential. Will have opportunities to learn more skills in bioinformatics and coding. Excellent teamwork and collaboration skills with a diverse team. Displays high standards of attendance, punctuality, maintains confidentiality, and manages time effectively.
