Communication Specialist
We are seeking a Communications Specialist. The Communications Specialist role will be responsible for overseeing a variety of communications-related efforts within the Maryland Advanced Research Computing Center (MARCC) of the William H. Miller Department of Physics and Astronomy. These include a variety of communications-related tasks for Advanced Research Computing at Hopkins (ARCH), involving the administration, maintenance, and content management of the ARCH websites as well as the administration and maintenance of social media presence, including ARCH email lists, Facebook, Twitter and creation/dissemination of information via social media and ARCH email lists. The role will also be involved in the creation of printed publications and multimedia presentations to promote and share ARCH-hosted research, seminars, and conferences. The Communications Specialist is responsible for communicating with and disseminating information to funding agencies, Deans, faculty, students and the public, which includes drafting monthly newsletters to the user community. In collaboration with the Director, the Communication Specialist will be responsible for finalizing, editing and formatting ARCH reports to the Deans, funding agencies.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

40% - Website Content Management

  • Manage web content in WordPress, implement website content updates, collaborate with stakeholders to obtain website content. Organize and keep track of expected and received incoming content. Share content with team members.
  • Create icons and simple graphics for the website. Coordinate with stakeholders to determine requirements for new and updated graphics. Share graphics and templates with team members.
  • Coordinate with ARCH members to identify and implement new website requirements, including new layouts, styles, and functionality.
  • Administer web forms for event and symposia RSVPs, resource requests, and membership applications. Ensure relevant stakeholders receive form submissions. Unpublish outdated forms.
  • Plan, implement, and create quarterly Website Analytics Reports with Google Analytics and Tag Manager. Communicate report results with ARCH leadership.
  • Manages tutorial materials on ARCH website

20% - Social Media and Emails

  • Update and implement social media marketing and communications strategy. Post event and news announcements on Facebook, Twitter. Identify new social media outlets. Network and connect with other Johns Hopkins and Big Data social media users, including, for example, researchers, schools, institutes, and media outlets.
  • Oversee and manage listserv email lists. Add and remove users. Add and remove owners and moderators. Administer list settings, such as who can send to the list. Create new lists as needed.

22% - Publications

  • Design, create, and distribute quarterly e-newsletters. Communicate and coordinate with stakeholders to obtain e-newsletter content. Organize and keep track of incoming content. Share content with team members as needed.
  • Obtain content for, design, and create the ARCH Annual Review, meeting tight deadlines. Coordinate with stakeholders on timeline and requirements. Organize and share incoming content with team members.

15% - Events
  • Coordinate and staff events, including seminars, workshops, conferences, and symposia.
  • Promote and post event videos on website and in social media.

3% - Training

  • Keep up-to-date with industry standard practices, improve full stack web development capabilities.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrated experience with web content creation in WordPress or similar CMS.
  • Experience with Microsoft products (MSWord, Excel).
  • Professional-level writing and proofing skills.
  • Ability to mockup and communicate design ideas.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Hands-on experience with HTML and CSS.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. Proficiency with InDesign desirable.
  • Experience creating graphics for web and print with Adobe products.
  • Knowledge of industry standards for web usability.
  • Ability to assess priorities and respond quickly to changing needs.
  • Ability to manage work on multiple projects, assess and prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Must be able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in related field.
  • Two years related experience, preferably in web design, content management systems, and database management.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in technical writing, documentation and technical publications preferred.

Starting Salary Range: $44,850 - $61,600 (Commensurate with experience)

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
