Organizational Unit Overview:Information Technology and Computing Services (ITCS) is the central agency that supports enterprise-wide computing at East Carolina University. We will achieve this through increasing the core functions and deploying appropriate technology throughout the university.
The Database Administration team manages the Enterprise databases for the University, focusing on stability, availability and recoverability. We perform traditional DBA tasks such as designing and implementing logical and physical database structures. We also utilize leading edge database technologies for high availability, data replication and ETL operations, such as Oracle RAC, GoldenGate, Oracle Data Integrator and DataGuard. We serve in a consultative capacity in working with Applications Analysts, to ensure that the conceptual and design phases of new applications are consistent with the database environment. Additionally the DBA team makes technical recommendations and implements policies and standards relating to database design, optimization, and recovery procedures; as well as data access and security requirements.
This position will function as a Database Administrator (DBA), with primary responsibility for Oracle. The DBA will utilize database management guidelines, and assume a supporting role in the management of all Oracle instances/databases, in consultation with Senior DBAs. More generally, this position will install, configure, tune, and maintain primarily Oracle databases on Linux operating systems. This position will monitor database systems using various tools in order to determine baseline performance levels, and to identify and minimize/eliminate bottlenecks or other forms of performance degradation. This position will assist with the installation, configuration and maintenance of applications that are currently being maintained by the DBA team. This position will manage Oracle security according to established policies, and adhere to data standards as defined by ECU’s Data Governance committee, ensuring that sensitive data is identified and protected within the database. This position will also be solely responsible for managing and implementing projects as assigned by the DBA Manager and/or Senior DBA, taking and working Database support tickets as they come in, and acting as a DBA resource for projects.
This position will be required to participate in an on-call rotation.
This position may be eligible for Flexible Work Arrangements (FWA) under the ECU FWA Policy.
Employees are required to adjust their standard work schedule to meet the requirements of their position, which includes and not limited to evening and weekend hours to perform scheduled and unscheduled workload requirements to maintain University operations.
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation :None

• Experience in monitoring the performance of software

• Experience in preserving data integrity
• Ethically handling private data, including financial and/or healthcare data for certain companies
• Experience with database queries
• Knowledge of database design and theories
• Ability to work with data architects and other IT specialists to set up, maintain and monitor data networks
• Knowledge of database structure languages, such as SQL or SQL/PSM
• Familiarity with database management best practices
• Knowledge of IT security best practices
• Excellent attention to detail
• Problem-solving and critical thinking
• Ability to explain complex ideas in simple terms
• Good multitasking abilities
• 1 or more years in installing and management of Oracle’s DBMS.
• 1 or more years in Oracle database administration tools
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills
