Video and Content Manager

Position Summary

Reporting to the Director of Marketing and Communications, and with a passion for creativity, innovation, and trend adoption, the Video and Content Manager will play a vital role on a small, collaborative team. We are seeking an experienced team member who will leverage their digital storytelling experience by planning and producing high-quality, multi-media assets to tell the story of ComArtSci and its students, faculty, staff and alumni. In addition, this role assists in maintaining and improving the college’s robust website.

You will work closely with a team of digital, marketing, communications, and multimedia professionals to produce visual stories that capture ComArtSci’s narrative, including the excellence of our programs, creative projects and research. The chosen candidate will be part of a collaborative, fun, innovative work environment that encourages the generation of fresh ideas to support and drive the reputation of the ComArtSci brand. The successful candidate will be comfortable in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment managing multiple projects concurrently.

The position will also be responsible for editing and updating content on the college’s website, documenting analytics, and aggregating and managing digital assets from faculty and students across the college to use in promotion. In addition, the role will collaborate with other unit content editors from around the college to establish best practices, website compliancy and accessibility, and align with ComArtSci and university brand standards.

Michigan State University’s College of Communication Arts and Sciences, established in 1955, was the first such college in the country. With nationally ranked programs and internationally renowned faculty members, MSU ComArtSci prepares students for careers across a broad spectrum of the arts and sciences of communication.

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Work with the Marketing and Communications team to identify and shape visual communications for the college, based on ongoing needs and overarching strategy, as prioritized by the supervisor.

  • Film and edit, creative and engaging photos and videos, and work with the MarCom team to strategize video opportunities for multiple platforms, including ComArtSci social media properties, email, newsletters, website, etc.

  • Manage all video pre-production scheduling, production, and post-production with an emphasis on on-time delivery of creative assets of quality.

  • Complete all post-production, including editing, color correction, sound mixing, motion graphics, captioning, and voice-over recording.

  • Manage visual consistency, innovation, and quality control across all produced pieces.

  • Content management for the college’s internal and external websites, including publishing daily news updates and events and work with college contributors to make website changes.

  • Review and edit web copy and digital assets to meet accessibility and brand standards.

  • Use SEO tactics and CMS to maximize web search rankings, optimize content, and analyze user engagement.

  • Train content contributors in college departments/units regarding posting content on the site.

  • Use analytics tools to recommend changes to the site and its content and improve overall performance for the site.

  • Consult with other college units and departments on website best practices, accessibility and university brand standards.

  • Communicate with cross-campus stakeholders to gather information and capture visual assets for events, meetings, news, and promotions.

  • Explore the ComArtSci building and the MSU campus to build relationships with students, faculty and staff.

  • Create and manage an organizational system for all raw footage, photos, and audio captured, including production equipment and hard drives.

  • Upload and maintain content for three building monitors.

  • Direct and/or train interns to maintain the ComArtSci identity and meet client communication needs.

  • Maintain knowledge of current best practices and technology in video production.

  • Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
  • Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in communication, broadcast media, new media design, digital media arts and technology, or a related field.

  • One to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in photography, videography and web editing.

  • Strong knowledge of HTML, CSS, and Adobe Photoshop, with the ability to modify existing code as needed.

  • Ability to creatively translate abstract concepts into effective visual form in a variety of media; utilize production tools to design, edit and produce video and photo materials.

  • Ability to explain technical concepts in a non-technical manner; assist staff with corresponding technical requirements.

  • Experience working in a production style workflow (Web, Print, or both) while also understanding file formats (.jpg, .tiff, .png, .mp4, .avi etc.) and their intended areas of use.

  • Experience in Microsoft Office, including Word and PowerPoint.

  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Creative, high-energy individual with exceptional, proven photography and videography skills.

  • Familiarity with project management tools and processes a plus.

  • Candidates must be able to interact effectively and professionally with a wide range of people including faculty, administrative and professional staff, and students.

  • Intellectual curiosity, flexibility, and an interest in learning new things will be important to success in this position.

  • The selected candidate will have excellent written and verbal communication skills; the ability to work autonomously with sound judgment; excellent organizational and time management skills; strong interpersonal and networking skills; be resourceful.

  • Strong knowledge and understanding of current/emerging trends in web design.

  • Familiarity with web utilities and products, graphic programs, and desktop applications, and strong understanding of content management systems.

  • Experience working in corporate, agency, or higher education communications.

  • Expertise in web accessibility, search engine optimization and Google Analytics
