Controls Engineer I/II
Position SummaryAll experience levels will be considered and hired into the corresponding MSU Pay Grade Level. This position will be hired at a level I or II depending on qualifications and experience.
Purpose
The Controls Engineer II will design, develop, document, deploy and support the FRIB EPICS/PLC-based control systems, as well as required instrumentation and motor controls, supporting commissioning and operation.
Major Duties/Responsibilities
- Manage the design, documentation, programming, and installation of EPICS/PLC-based control systems
- Manage the preventive maintenance, repair and parts management for assigned equipment, keeping records of maintenance tasks and results
- Determine ways to optimize logic or systems without making overly complex
- Foresee any potential problem areas and notify line manager
- Interface with operations and commissioning teams to provide prompt support
- Stay current with EPICS/PLC technologies to keep FRIB control systems up-to-date, and continually strive to improve productivity, efficiency, quality, and uniformity
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in this job classification.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- General knowledge of PLC-based controls system, associated hardware/software, and implementation guidelines
- Ability and skill to program, test, and troubleshoot general PLC programs for Allen Bradley ControlLogix, GuardLogix, CompactLogix, and/or CompactGuardLogix PLCs
- Skill to develop and maintain electrical drawing with AutoCAD
- Ability to lead engineers or technicians to fabricate, install, test, and troubleshoot electronic systems
- Ability to develop a small-scale PLC-based controls system from end-to-end (from design to test)
- Excellent communication skills to communicate effectively and credibly, both verbally and in writing with all audiences.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suites.

The MSU Classification requirements for an APA 10:
Bachelor’s degree in Systems or Computer Science; or Engineering or Physics, with coursework in Systems or Computer Science; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in electronics, mechanical and/or electrical drafting and fabrication techniques, or computer programming in one or more languages used by the NSCL; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
The MSU Classification requirements for an APA 12:
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Physics; three to five years of progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in fabrication techniques, cryogenic systems, electronics, mechanical and electronic drafting and computer systems; and may require experience in the use of CAD and/or related engineering systems, including file transfer; experience in the use of exotic metals, including knowledge of their properties, in the fabrication and assembly of sophisticated research equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desired QualificationsBachelor’s degree in Systems or Computer Science; or Engineering or Physics, with coursework in Systems or Computer Science; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in electronics, mechanical and/or electrical drafting and fabrication techniques, or computer programming in one or more languages used by the NSCL; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
