Position Description

The Department of Psychology at San Jose Staté University (SJSU) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Clinical Psychology with preferred expertise in the area of child/adolescent or family-focused clinical psychology. The vision of the Psychology Department is to provide high-quality education in psychology that fosters the development of students so that they will make worthy contributions to society. We value a student-centered approach that emphasizes teaching, research, and applied training. The Department offers a BA in Psychology, MS Clinical Mental Health Counseling, MS Industrial and Organizational Psychology, and MA in Research and Experimental Psychology. Required Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. in Clinical or Counseling Psychology from an APA-accredited university, with training as a clinical scientist or scientist-practitioner, by August 2023
  • Either a licensed psychologist or license-eligible in California by the position start date, with the expectation of licensure within 2-3 years of hire (details on California licensure available at psychology.ca.gov).
  • Demonstrated scholarly productivity in the area of clinical psychology.
  • Commitment to, and demonstrated potential for, teaching excellence at the undergraduate level and within the MS Clinical Mental Health Counseling graduate program.
  • Ability to teach, mentor, and provide clinical supervision in the MS Clinical Mental Health Counseling program, which trains mental health practitioners to provide evidence-based services in community mental health settings.
  • Applicants should demonstrate an understanding of and ability to effectively support the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population as might have been gained in multicultural/cross-cultural study, training, teaching, and other comparable experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Priority will be given to candidates who possess one or more of the following:

  • Research or applied experience related to implementing evidence-based practices in community mental health and/or school-based settings.
  • Research productivity and/or applied experience related to the study and practice of child/adolescent or family-focused clinical psychology
  • Commitment to seeking external funding to support research-related activities and/or to enhance student learning.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collegial atmosphere of shared governance.

Key Responsibilities

San José State University is a teaching institution that values mentored research. This position involves duties related to teaching, research, and service to the Department and University.

Teaching

Teaching responsibilities for this position will include undergraduate and graduate coursework in clinical psychology, the candidate’s area of specialization, and undergraduate service courses as needed by the department. Undergraduate courses may include writing in psychology, statistics, research methods, psychopathology (child and/or adult), clinical psychology, and/or introductory psychology.

The MS Clinical Mental Health Counseling graduate program is rooted in evidence-based practice and seeks to train masters level psychotherapists consistent within that framework. Graduate course responsibilities may include teaching child or adult psychopathology, family and couples therapy, lifespan development, psychology of contemporary families, theories and methods of psychotherapy, addictions, applied research methods, crisis and trauma counseling, gender and ethnicity in psychotherapy, psychopharmacology, and fieldwork. The candidate must demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, cultural background, ethnicity, primary language, and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and advisement.

Research

The candidate will be expected to develop a program of research and to pursue both internal and external funding. The candidate must maintain a productive research program, which may result from collaborative research across the University, with other academic institutions, or other external agencies. Student mentoring is valued in our department, and a successful candidate will mentor and support undergraduate and graduate students of diverse backgrounds in conducting research.

Service

The candidate will participate in shared governance, usually in department, college, and university committees and other service assignments. The successful applicant should be prepared to take an active role in the MS Clinical Mental Health Counseling graduate program. Responsibilities on this committee include serving as a mentor and advisor around issues of graduate student development, participating in program requirements, and providing clinical case consultation or supervision.
