Your opportunity:

The Associate Editor, U of T News, and Senior Reporter thrives in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment where the ability to handle a high volume of highly scrutinized content on a daily basis is key. The incumbent is a seasoned communications professional who provides advice and support to internal stakeholders across the university on news and editorial content for the university’s owned channels in support of the communication goals of the university. This position reports to the Editor-in-Chief, U of T News.

This position is responsible for the strategic enhancement of the University of Toronto news website through the development and production of news stories that align with the broader goals of the university’s communication priorities. The incumbent plays a leadership role in the development and execution of a content strategy that maximizes the university’s communications opportunities across its owned platforms including:

- Development and implementation of the content strategy for the U of T news website including, at times, controversial or sensitive news coverage.
- Day-to-day editorial operations of the U of T news website: editing and publishing news items, feature stories, photo galleries and other multi-media content for the news site.
- Research and write major stories
- Review approaches, angles and emphases of stories with communication colleagues


Your responsibilities will include:


• Editing content for accuracy, structure, style and tone
• Researching and recommending story ideas that advance priorities and initiatives
• Tracking milestones and timelines for stories
• Advising on strategies to communicate across multiple channels
• Implementing project communications plans
• Drafting and editing content for print and/or online communications channels

Qualifications:

Essential Qualifications:


• Bachelor's Degree in a related field (e.g. journalism) or acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Minimum five (5) years’ experience in progressively responsible and related positions in reporting or feature writing in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment with a high volume of content, with particular emphasis on, and expertise in, editing and production in an online environment
• Demonstrated ability to work closely with partners across a complex public sector organization, to provide support and advice to them in the achievement of their goals.
• Demonstrated excellent writing experience, including demonstrated ability to deliver high-quality content across the broadest range of topics and appropriate to a range of communications platforms.
• Demonstrated initiative in uncovering and developing stories and finding creative ways to tell those stories in terms of style and platforms.
• Demonstrated excellence in copywriting, proofreading and editing skills for online communications, copyediting and proofreading skills, attention to detail and accuracy
• Strong CMS and Photoshop skills; working knowledge of HTML; Understanding of and ability to apply search engine optimization (SEO) principles
• Excellent research and reporting skills, ability to deliver high-quality content in a range of formats.
• Excellent and rapid writing skills and a demonstrated ability to translate complex concepts across a broad range of topics into stories that appeal to a general audience.
• Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with a range of contributors to the news site to help ensure a regular stream of excellent content.
• Ability to manage conflicting priorities and shifting deadlines.
• Strong interpersonal, organizational and communication skills are essential, as is the ability to interact comfortably and respectfully with all levels of academic and administrative staff.

Assets (Nonessential):
• Videography experience an asset.
• Knowledge of the University of Toronto or other university environments is highly desirable.

USW Pay Band 15 -- $86,011 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $109,993. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
