The Department of Arts, Culture & Media at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) invites applications for a full-time teaching stream position in the area of Theatre and Performance. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream with an expected start date of July 1, 2023, or shortly thereafter.


Applicants must have earned an MFA by the time of application. Alternatively, applicants must have earned by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter a PhD degree in Theatre and Performance or a closely related area plus professional experience commensurate to an MFA. Candidates must also have a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching. A demonstrated record of teaching practice in the area of community-engaged theatre, applied theatre or theatre in education will be considered an asset. We seek candidates whose teaching interests complement and enhance our existing departmental strengths.


Candidates must have teaching experience in a degree granting program, including both practice-based studio work in theatre and development and leadership of seminar-style classes, in addition to directing performances in an academic environment. Experience in curriculum development, online pedagogy, and lecture-based pedagogy are additional assets. Additionally, candidates must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellent pedagogical inquiry and a demonstrated interest in teaching-related scholarly activities. Evidence of excellence in teaching and a commitment to excellent pedagogical inquiry can be demonstrated, through teaching accomplishments, awards and accolades, presentations at significant conferences, the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application (with required materials outlined below) as well as strong letters of reference from referees of high standing.

The U of T Scarborough Theatre and Performance program is a liberal arts-style theatre program in which students take seminar-style courses in theatre history and theory in parallel with studio-based practical training in performance, directing, and applied or community-engaged theatre practices. The successful candidate for this position can expect to teach a combination of core seminar-style and studio-based courses in the program along with other thematic courses suiting their expertise and current projects. In keeping with our curriculum, candidates must demonstrate their commitment to theatre as a vehicle for advancing intercultural understanding and challenging discriminatory hegemonies of race, gender and sexual orientation.
