Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

The Institute for the Study of the Americas, ISA, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge of the Latin American experience in the Western Hemisphere. It builds on a long-standing and distinguished tradition of scholarly interest in the diverse regions that make up Latin America, including Mexico, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean.

Position Summary:

The Outreach Program Coordinator (OPC) of the Consortium in Latin American and Caribbean Studies at the University of North Carolina and Duke University is responsible for developing, coordinating, and providing educational outreach services with a focus on Latin America and the Caribbean to pre-service and in-service K-12 teachers as well as educators teaching in 4-year and community colleges including institutions designated as Minority Serving Institutions. The OPC has responsibility for advancing knowledge and understanding of Latin America and the Caribbean through professional development workshops, discussion groups, film screenings, summer institutes, study tours, among others. In coordination with the UNC School of Education (SOE), the OPC will facilitate collaborations with Latin American partners; collaborate with SOE faculty to provide relevant content to Pre-MAT and MAT students; advise MAT students as applicable on their fieldwork portfolios; and support the SOE Director of Undergraduate Advising and Engagement on K-12 education events related to Latin America and the Caribbean. The OPC also designs and provides outreach initiatives to the general public, media, business community, local and state organizations, and professional organizations. In all activities, the OPC will collaborate with UNC and Duke faculty, graduate students, and professional staff as part of the Consortium in Latin American and Caribbean Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity or comparable background in independent academic or instructional activities, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. This experience may be related to the direction/oversight of programs that focus the academic and research resources of a higher education institution towards community or regional issues.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

* At least 2 years’ experience required in K-12 and/or community college education and developing curriculum and materials for K-12 and/or community colleges, especially related to Latin America.
High level of proficiency in Spanish. Excellent written and communication skills in English. Proven expertise in effective, professional and timely written and oral communications. Demonstrated program development and management experience and demonstrated use of analytical planning and administrative skills.
* Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills. Ability to work harmoniously with other staff, faculty, administrators, teachers, library patrons, other program providers, other University offices, and external organizations.
* Creativity, energy, and initiative, together with patience and flexibility.
* Proficiency in Spanish required. Knowledge of Portuguese also desired.
* Able to prioritize work and juggle a range of activities under multiple deadlines and sources of leadership. Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment.
* Excellent written and communication skills in English.
* Computer skills: proficiency in spreadsheets, word processing and Internet search tools.
* Must be willing to work some flexible hours as required by evening, weekend and study tour activities. Must have own transportation to be able to attend meetings outside the office including regular visits to Duke University and partner school sites to work and collaborate with Consortium partners. Must be willing and available to travel occasionally to Latin America/Caribbean. Must be able to lift 45 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Knowledge of web design tools such as Word Press, and/or HTML, and of graphic design software such as InDesign.

Familiarity with the NC Department of Public Instruction curricular and teacher preparation guidelines.

Location: UNC is located in the heart of Chapel Hill, the best college town in America! It's a friendly town of about 40,000 in the geographical center of North Carolina. Chapel Hill is at the western point of the Research Triangle, an area of about one million people, comprised of Chapel Hill, the cities of Durham and Raleigh, and the Research Triangle Park, home of many corporate offices and scientific research centers.
