Job Description:


The Department of Biological Sciences at Binghamton University (SUNY: State University of New York) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the area of Integrative Plant Biology. The ideal candidate will develop an original research program that addresses fundamental questions in plant biology with an emphasis on plant biotic interactions. The successful candidate could have areas of specialization that include: genetic and physiological mechanisms of symbiosis, factors influencing shifts between mutualistic, commensal, and parasitic relationships, the impact of microbial symbionts on plant responses to biotic and/or abiotic stress, and/or biochemical communication between plants and their symbionts.


Priority will be given to applicants whose research program complements and strengthens interactions between established departmental strengths in Genetic and Molecular Interactions, Global Change, and Infectious Disease Biology.


The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in Biology or a related field and will join a diverse biology department with over 30 tenured/tenure-track and teaching faculty members. They will l be expected to develop a vigorous, externally funded research program that contributes to our designation as an R1 institution through the training and mentorship of MS and PhD and MS students, and will also contribute to the department's teaching mission by instructing both undergraduate and graduate courses in their area of expertise.

The E. W. Heier Research and Teaching Greenhouses provide both controlled-access research space dedicated to plant biology, as well as a public collection for teaching, outreach, and community engagement. In addition, the university's natural areas for teaching and research cover 600 acres of undeveloped land, including the Nature Preserve and an outdoor Ecological Research Facility.

The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in Biology or a related field, and postdoctoral experience is highly preferred. History

Binghamton University opened its doors as Triple Cities College in 1946, to serve the needs of local veterans returning from service in World War II. Originally located in Endicott, N.Y., five miles west of the present campus, the fledgling school was a branch of Syracuse University.

Four years later, the college was incorporated into the State University of New York (SUNY) and renamed Harpur College in honor of Robert Harpur, a Colonial teacher, patriot and pioneer who helped settle the area west of Binghamton.

In 1961, the campus moved across the Susquehanna River to Vestal. Growing enrollment and a reputation for excellence soon led to the selection of Harpur College as one of four doctorate-granting University Centers in the SUNY system.

In 1965, the campus was formally designated the State University of New York at Binghamton, and in 1992, Binghamton University was adopted as our informal name.
