Position Purpose:

The Instrument Control Technician is responsible for the daily calibration, maintenance, and data collection of the College’s power plant continuous emissions monitors.

Required Qualifications - Education and Yrs Exp:

High School plus 5+ years' experience or equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • High School graduate with technical school degree in electronics preferred.
  • Five + years of relevant experience.
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license and be able to qualify as a Dartmouth Approved Driver.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Technical school degree in electronics preferred.
  • Must have successfully completed the following training prior to performing work to which the training relates:
– Hazardous Waste Storage and Handling
– Spill Prevention Controls and Countermeasures
– Driver Safety
– Hazard Communication
– Lock-out/tag-out
– Respirator Training, Fit, and Physical Examination
– Working in confined spaces
– CPR Training to include AED training
– Fire Fighting Training
– Fork Truck Operations
– Hazardous Chemical Handling

Description:

Maintenance

  • Repairs, troubleshoots, and replaces as necessary pneumatic and electronic devices used to measure, indicate, or control various systems.
  • Provides routine and preventative maintenance on equipment and control systems.
  • Coordinates schedules with plant supervisor and Lead-man in order to participate in scheduled and emergency boiler maintenance and repair efforts.
  • Maintains and checks operation of the Continuous Emissions Monitor on a daily basis.
  • Maintains, troubleshoots, and reconfigures the plant distributed control systems, including the management of 3500 tags on both primary and backup servers.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs plant boiler burner management systems and boiler air-fuel-water controls of pneumatic and electronic types.
  • Communicates with external contacts/vendors for repair and replacement parts.
  • Conducts maintenance on plant UPS systems including battery testing and monitoring to provide historical trending for predictive analysis.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on complex systems and equipment, requiring state of the art techniques and testing procedures.

Calibration and Installation
  • Calibrates indicators, gauges and transmitters.
  • Performs turnkey installation of new equipment (wiring, piping, calibration and start up).
  • Calibrates and maintains in good working order all plant transmitters, gauges, Distributed control systems, control valves and actuators.
  • Installs, maintains, programs, and tunes all VFD/VSDs and soft starts associated with plant equipment.

Data Collection and Reporting
  • Collects emissions data and performs statistical analyses in order to prepare required reports.
  • As directed by Chief Engineer, reports regular emission results from data collected on a quarterly basis to state and federal agencies.
  • Conducts Quarterly Audits of CEM equipment. As required by Federal regulations, records calibrations made, parts and components used, and inventory of parts on hand.
  • Maintains and catalogs historical data, populates databases for plant daily, monthly, quarterly, and annual usage and efficiency reports.
  • Conducts root cause analysis when process control issues arise through the use of DCS historical trends.
  • Conducts thermal imaging of all electrical motors and cabinets to provide historical trending for predictive analysis.

Other
  • Develops, implements, and improves control schemes and system logic (software and hardware), including user interface applications.
  • Updates existing DCS graphics and/or design new graphics per user and/or technology demand.
  • Assists with other mechanical and electrical maintenance activities in the power plant.

  • Working in stretched, cramped or awkward positions.

  • Work is performed indoors, outdoors, in bad weather, and in areas that are dirty, or smoky or where fumes and steam are present.
  • Work involves exposure to extreme high temperatures and noise levels.
  • Work involves wearing special or protective clothing such as: overalls, gloves, goggles, ear plugs or protectors, and hard hat.
  • Work may require employee to wear protective clothing and a breathing apparatus in order to shut down equipment under conditions of extreme high temperature where fumes and thick smoke are present.
