Assistant Vice President for Business Affairs

About the Opportunity
The Assistant Vice President for Business Affairs manages the financial resources of the University of North Carolina System Office and provides direct guidance and business leadership for the organization. The position coordinates and monitors System Office activities in the areas of accounting, financial reporting, and strategic sourcing. The position collaborates closely with senior staff to manage the organization's resources. In addition, the position oversees the internal business affairs of the UNC system office, including accounting, budget execution, purchasing, sponsored programs, and financial reporting.

This position may be eligible for a hybrid or remote work arrangement, consistent with System Office policy. UNC System employees are generally required to reside in North Carolina, within a 2-hour commuting distance of their assigned duty station. 

About the UNC System Office
The UNC System Office includes the offices of the President and other senior administrators of the multi-campus University of North Carolina System. The UNC System is a treasured public institution dedicated to serving the people of North Carolina through world-class teaching, research, and community engagement. Today, nearly 250,000 students are enrolled in our 16 universities across the state and at the NC School of Science and Mathematics. System Office staff is responsible for executing the policies of the UNC Board of Governors and providing University-wide leadership in the areas of academic affairs, business and financial management, long-range planning, student affairs, research, legal affairs, and government relations. The UNC System Office also has administrative oversight of a number of University affiliates, including PBS North Carolina, the North Carolina Arboretum, the NC State Education Assistance Authority, and University of North Carolina Press.

About the Team
The Business Affairs unit is responsible for administering the University's financial affairs. The unit has overall responsibility for administering the financial affairs of the UNC System Office along with fiscal coordination for affiliated entities including PBSNC and NC State Education Assistance Authority.

Minimum Education, Experience, and Skills
Master's degree (preferably in business, finance, accounting, or public administration), and five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in accounting and financial management, preferably at a college or university, and ability to effectively analyze and generate financial reports

Required Competencies
Advanced computer skills including knowledge and experience using ERP systems, spreadsheet, and database capabilities is critical. The ability to lead and develop personnel, develop accounting reports, and manage special projects are also required. Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, fund accounting, and the ability to maximize the efficiency of accounting operations are required. Effective supervisory skills, with a team approach to management and critical thinking skills, are required as are excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. 

Preferred Education, Experience, and Skills

  • CPA license
  • Bachelor's degree with eight (8) years of professional-level experience.
  • Prefer related prior public sector or higher education experience.
  • Prefer in-depth knowledge of North Carolina accounting and budgeting rules, regulations, and practices.
  • Prefer prior experience with the University of North Carolina System.
  • Prefer understanding of GASB accounting standards.
  • Ability to work through complex issues directly with senior staff
  • Ability to exercise judgment, discretion and initiative in the development and interpretation of a wide range of policies and procedures
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with organization wide personnel, the university and state government officials and the general public.
