Description:

The Department of Psychology at Hofstra University invites applications for an anticipated full-time, tenure-track assistant professor position beginning September 2023. Applicants should have a strong emphasis in the area of Cognitive Neuroscience, with a research focus that complements our current neuroscience faculty expertise in memory, executive function, spatial cognition and decision-making.The successful candidate will be expected to teach 18 hours a year (2 to 3 courses a semester) primarily in an undergraduate program whose mission is to train students in the scientific foundations of psychology. The new hire will be asked to teach a subset of the following undergraduate courses: Introduction to Neuroscience (co-taught with a faculty member in biology), Cognition, Sensation & Perception, Introduction to Psychology, Statistics, Research Methods, and a Research Seminar in Neuroscience or Cognitive Psychology. Psychology faculty also often teach undergraduate courses in the Hofstra Honors College or First Year Connections programs, which offer small classes to promote student retention and instructional innovation. Opportunities may occasionally arise to teach graduate courses within the candidate’s field of interest as part of the following programs also housed within the department: a Ph.D. Program in Clinical Psychology, a PsyD. Program in School-Community Psychology, a Master’s Program in Industrial/Organizational Psychology, and a Ph.D. Program in Applied Organizational Psychology. A qualified candidate may have shared access to the department’s new neurophysiology lab, which houses a B-Alert X24 20-channel mobile EEG system, BIOPAC functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) system and BIOPAC equipment for measurement of skin conductance and heart rate variability. Faculty can also request access to the Behavioral Research in Business Lab, which includes 27 workstations with cameras, audio/voice equipment, eyetracking capabilities, and a variety of other biometric options. The School of Engineering is currently building a big data analysis lab with an HPC/AI cluster and HPE parallel file system; the initial build (opening in 2023) includes a two-node NVIDIA GPU cluster with plans for a further 2-4 nodes upon grant funding. Finally, research collaborations with, and joint appointment to, the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research of the Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine is possible, for access to a Signa 3-T MRI equipped for structural and functional imaging.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Applicants are expected to have:· Completed a PhD in Psychology, Neuroscience, or a closely related field by September 1, 2023.· A strong emphasis in the area of Cognitive Neuroscience, with a research focus that complements our current neuroscience faculty expertise in memory, executive function, spatial cognition and decision-making.· A research plan that incorporates clear opportunities for undergraduate research assistants· Demonstrated commitment to promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion in an educational environment.· Successful candidates will have demonstrated a commitment to promoting equity, diversity and inclusion in an educational environment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (If Any):· Demonstrated success in teaching undergraduate classes.· Research that incorporates behavioral and neuroscience techniques used together and separately (i.e., publications with only behavioral measures)
