University Relations & Marketing at Oregon State University is seeking a Manager of Executive Social Media Communications. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position.

University Relations and Marketing delivers accurate, engaging and inclusive messaging to OSU internal and external audiences. All members of URM work to enhance the Oregon State brand and deliver on the university’s promise as the state’s land grant university through integrated and aligned marketing and communication strategies.

Position Summary

The manager of executive social media communications reports to the vice president for URM and collaborates with the Office of the President. This position is responsible for developing social media strategies, messages and content for the university’s president, the vice president for university relations and marketing and other designated university executive leaders. Social media strategies created and carried out by the manager and content produced by the manager will promote OSU’s brand; authentically portray the university’s president and other OSU leaders; creatively tell stories; portray the engagement of the president and other leaders; inspire and promote participation with the university, its president and other leaders; and promote the momentum of the university within Oregon, nationally and beyond. These social media efforts are conducted in collaboration with other URM and university colleagues engaged in social media, digital and other communications strategies.

The manager of executive social media communications has proven high-level written and interpersonal communications skills. This position manages multiple projects with quick turnarounds in a deadline-driven writing environment for the Office of the President and the vice president of URM. The manager utilizes excellent judgment and creativity in working with university leaders, URM colleagues, faculty and staff in performance of their job.

The manager of executive social media communications collaborates with the University Marketing digital team on website projects for the leadership pages of the oregonstate.edu website. The position also works in coordination and collaboration with URM’s social media team and University Marketing leadership team to develop strategies for leadership social media platforms and ways that those platforms connect and amplify the messages of the university’s social media platforms. This work involves proactive strategy and planning as well as the ability to pivot quickly to respond to unanticipated news, events, opportunities or issues.

The manager of executive social media communications works at the direction of the vice president for university relations and marketing. This position collaborates with the vice president, as well as the associate vice president for university relations and marketing and the chief assistant to the university’s president, as it regards presidential social media communications. These four positions form the OSU executive digital communications team and discuss and coordinate aligned social media communications strategies for the president’s office and top university executives. This position also collaborates with the assistant vice president for university relations and marketing as it regards marketing messaging by the president, the vice president for university relations and marketing, and other designated university executives.

The manager of executive social media communications adheres to the three foundational pillars of University Relations and Marketing, including advancing branded and aligned marketing and communications, promoting the values of diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice, and providing exceptional customer service.

Decision Making/Guidelines

The manager of executive social media communications develops social media communication strategies, composes social media communications and assists with digital/web content creation on behalf of the president, vice president for university relations and marketing, and other designated university executives.

The manager of executive social media communications collaborates with the university’s executive communications team that includes the vice president for university relations and marketing, the associate vice president for university relations and marketing, and the chief assistant to the president. The manager meets with the executive communications team and the university’s president to develop strategies to portray and promote the active engagement of the president within the university community, as a university leader, as an OSU community partner, and to raise the awareness of the president as a thought leader within Oregon, as well as nationally and globally, and throughout higher education nationally.

The manager of executive social media communications manages social media accounts for the Office of the President and the vice president for university relations and marketing. The manager of executive communications understands and expresses the social voice, personality and tone on behalf of the president, vice president for university relations and marketing, and other designated university executives.

The manager of executive social media communications uses data collection, measurements and analysis to gain insight and monitor trends and information to better understand audiences and user experience to guide strategies and communications. As such, this position routinely measures and reports on effectiveness and engagement of executive communications.

The manager of executive social media communications is made aware of sensitive and confidential information which may impact the university’s reputation and image and manages information to counter negative perceptions of the president, other OSU administrators and the university.

Position Duties

40% – Social Media
•Oversees the digital and social media networks for the Office of the President, the vice president for university relations and marketing and other designated university executives. This includes content planning, creation and dissemination.
•Monitors direct and indirect mentions of the president and the vice president for university relations and marketing and other designated university executives.
•Develops and carries out strategies to grow a social following for the president and vice president’s social accounts, and drive growth and engagement across all social platforms.
•Builds, grows and maintains the social voice and tone for the president, vice president for university relations and marketing and other designated university executives.
•Gathers and utilizes up to date knowledge of all popular social networks and their features, as well as social media trends and tools. Seeks to analyze and understand user behavior on each platform.
•Measures and reports the effectiveness of content using social analytics.

40% – Executive Communications
•Creates content for social media and digital platforms associated with the president, vice president for university relations and marketing and other designated university executives to support institutional messaging and priorities.
•Collaborates with URM colleagues regarding advancing media opportunities, reputation management, and issue management.
•Assists with internal communications in response to crisis situations that affect university perception and reputation.
•Maintains an archive of images, speeches, executive messaging and presentations that can be easily accessed and used as appropriate within social media executive communications.

20% University Leadership and Support
•Attends high impact university events and engagement activities as assigned, and supports the president, vice president for university relations and marketing and other designated university executives. This may include traveling to events. Builds strong relationships with university leaders they serve.
•Actively supports and engages in university efforts to advance diversity, equity and inclusion throughout Oregon State University, including DEI appropriate social media and digital communications and marketing.
•Routinely shares best practices and emerging practices in social media communications with URM colleagues, and engages in training and information sharing with other university communicators.

University Relations and Marketing supports work/life balance and allows for some hybrid work settings. this job can be performed both on campus and at home as arranged between employee and supervisor.
