Organizational Unit Overview:

The School of Dental Medicine is composed of ten administrative offices and four academic departments. The Administrative units include the Offices of the Dean, Vice Dean, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Associate Dean for Research, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, Associate Dean for Extramural Clinical Practices, Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics, Assistant Dean for Educational Support and Faculty Development, Assistant Dean for Academic Success and the Assistant Dean for Business Operations and Financial Affairs. The four academic departments are Surgical Sciences, Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, General Dentistry and Foundational Sciences.Included in the mission of the School of Dental Medicine is to educate dental care providers (both dental students and dental residents) and to address the oral health care needs of the underserved population of North Carolina. The School of Dental Medicine meets these missions by operating dental clinics that provide both educational experiences for the dental students and residents and provides dental care to the residents of North Carolina. These clinics occur in both Ross Hall in Greenville, North Carolina, as well as Community Service-Learning Centers located throughout North Carolina. In order to operate these clinics, appropriate dental auxiliaries and clinical staff are needed.

Job Duties :

The purpose of this position is to facilitate community-clinical linkages to coordinate patient care within the HRSA training grant. ECU has been funded to:
1. Increase the self-reported and faculty-assessed ability of residents to collaborate with community partners to effectively address one or more of the following social determinants of health – financial and access to community resources to address: financial strain, transportation, food security and adequate nutrition, housing/shelter, childcare, employment.2. Increase the number of dentists trained to, a) manage oral health programs, b) evaluate systems of care, and c) design data collection (surveillance) systems to measure oral health status.
The person in this position will work closely with Division of Dental Public Health faculty and the training sites to assure timely coordination and implementation of the project strategies related to improving care coordination and helping the residents identify and address gaps in health literacy as well as improve trainee skills in culturally appropriate communication. This person will serve as a resource for case management services and support development of strategies to address oral health literacy.
Work with ECU Project Leadership and CSLC Directors to:
· Develop clear and detailed plans to identify gaps in knowledge and practices among providers, patients and their families related to preventive oral health services · Indicate ways to address gaps identified related to preventive oral health services· Design and implement provider trainings that address oral health literacy and cultural competency
· Design and implement educational sessions to address social determinants of health (SDOH)

Minimum Education/Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the field assigned and one year of related training or experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

License or Certification required by statute or regulation:

None

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:

Registered dental hygienist, with clinical experience and have, or be in the process of receiving, Public Health Supervision status.
Training as a Community Dental Health Coordinator via an ADA approved program is desired.Experience working with dental school programs or planning of oral health services for children, adults, and community stakeholders, including dentists, dental students, and dental residents.

License or Certification required by the Department:
