Primary Function of Organizational Unit:

The position is offered with the Physiology Department within Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. The lab is located in the East Carolina Diabetes and Obesity Research Institute research facility, which houses a collaborative, metabolism-focused research community.

Job Duties :

An NIH-funded laboratory research Technician position for a motivated candidate is available in Dr. Jessica Ellis’ Lab. The Ellis lab is focused on the regulation of lipid metabolism and its effects on health and disease. The current projects in the lab are concerned with the lipid metabolism, mitochondrial metabolism and membrane biology with a focus on either neurobiology or muscle biology. Broadly, the selected candidate will assist with lab projects, both ongoing and developing, and will be expected to work well with others. The work duties associated with the position reflect the general operations of the lab. The technician will be trained and expected to independently conduct research using molecular biology, histology, and/or animal work. The technician is expected to carry out work carefully with high attention to detail and high organizational/record keeping skills, perform trouble shooting, provide training of new personnel, and assist with general lab operations as needed.

Job responsibilities include: Supervising and actively participating in multiple research projects; Responsible for oversight and coordination of activities of all laboratory staff, including but not limited to training staff on all equipment and methods used in the laboratory; Responsible for inventory and maintenance of all laboratory equipment and materials associated with on-going and former projects; Responsible for the development, implementation, and maintenance of all laboratory safety plans; Ensure training of all staff on safety regulations and responsible for research and safety compliance; Independently conduct cell culture and animal experiments; Serve as the Lab manager for Dr. Ellis (order reagents, maintain equipment, conduct required regulatory work chemical inventory, ensuring regulatory compliance).

Minimum Education/Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Experience in molecular biology and biochemistry techniques. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. Candidates hold doctoral and/or masters degrees will have priority.

License or Certification Required by the Department:
