Organizational Unit Overview:

The Nancy W. Darden Child Development Center (NDCDC) is a NAEYC accredited, 5-Star early childhood model training facility located on East Carolina University-Main Campus of Greenville, NC. This facility supports the Department of Human Development and Family Science under the College of Health and Human Performance. It provides students majoring in Birth through Kindergarten Teacher Education, Family/Community Services, and Child Life with a developmentally appropriate environment for observations, practicums, and internships.

NDCDC staff supervises undergraduate and graduate students as they apply child development theory in adult-child interactions, developmental guidance strategies, and inclusive curriculum design. Children are encouraged to become competent, independent thinkers, and problem solvers enhanced by a curriculum rich in play, social interaction, and language. The Creative Curriculum and Developmentally Appropriate Practices are implemented across all ages to support this theory and practice.

The NDCDC’s Mission is to provide high-quality early education and care for young children ages 3 months to 5 years. The NDCDC welcomes research and grant proposals from all East Carolina University Departments. Research conducted in the NDCDC must be approved by the university’s Institutional Review Board, the HDFS department, and the NDCDC. Job Duties :

The Department of Human Development and Family Science at East Carolina University (ECU) invites applications for a 12-month professional staff position as Director of the Nancy W. Darden Child Development Center. This position is available immediately. The review of applications will begin on November 1, 2022, and continue until the position is filled.

Leadership and Administration 80%
Overall administrative oversight to the Nancy W. Darden Child Development Center (NDCDC) includes: Deliver a developmentally appropriate program with attention to the high standards of an inclusive early childhood program. Ensure compliance with all state and national regulatory and accrediting agencies. Supervision and evaluation of NDCDC staff, work students, and practicum students. Management of the budget, recruitment, enrollment, and food services. Facilitate the daily operation of the NDCDC with attention to daily care, scheduling, health, nutrition, safety, and sanitation. Coordinate parent-teacher relationships including conferences, child evaluations, and parent-teacher development activities.

Instructional Support for University Students: 15%
Integration with arranged practicums and internships in the NDCDC. Collaborate with faculty (departmental and across disciplines) for implementing projects and lesson plans and with local schools and agencies that provide services to children in the NDCDC. Ensure that the curriculum reflects university coursework and accrediting standards.
Community Relations: 5%
As a model early childhood education program, provide information/presentations and tours of the center to members of the external community. Maintain positive relationships with the external community.

Contingent on Availability of Funding

Minimum Education/Experience :

  • A Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Child Development, Early Childhood Education, or a related field with a minimum of 5 years of full-time verifiable work experience in childcare facilities and early childhood education.
  • Currently, hold or be eligible for N.C. Administrative Early Childhood Credential and be familiar with early childhood professional standards.
  • Have Experience with developmentally appropriate interactions and instruction with young children.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of curriculum, state and national laws, and standards of accreditation and licensure in the childcare field.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation :

  • NC Early Childhood Administrative Credential

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education :

  • Prefer one year of successful administrative experience as a childcare director or assistant director; familiarity with a university lab or demonstration site; NC BK licensure, and experience planning, developing, and leading professional development with the staff.

  • Master’s degree or equivalent.

  • Have the ability to work with a range of individuals with diverse abilities, and be able to problem solve.
