Position Summary:

The Department of Visual Arts and Art History at Florida Atlantic University invites applications from artists dedicated to innovation in the field of Sculpture with teaching ability ranging from traditional methods to contemporary practices and technologies. Special emphasis is sought in practices and investigative themes of sustainability and aesthetic responses to new or newly purposed materials through craft, performance and other contemporary venues. This is a tenure-track position based at the university’s Boca Raton campus that is focused on the development of the sculpture area.

The sculpture area provides an environment for exploration on many levels. As sculptural media evolves to include site, sound, time, movement, and collaboration, FAU students develop into hybrid creators with a foundation of traditional methods. FAU sculpture emphasizes the practice and research of sculpture through mixed materials. The sculpture area welcomes students to expand upon the idea that sculpture, in conjunction with other Fine Art disciplines such as modern dance, creative writing, and music, can bring a unique and innovative aspect to interdisciplinary research.

The sculpture studio is a 'flex' space design with large open air instructional spaces. FAU has a working digital fabrication laboratory, as well as equipment for traditional fabrication techniques, including a laser cutter, three professional-grade 3D printers, and 20 laptops for shared student use, a table saw, band saws, chop saw, drill press, disc sander, hand tools, two MIG welders, a metal cutting band saw, a metal cutting chop saw, and a non-ferrous speedy melt. There is, also, a full foundry with a burn-out kiln.

The Department of Visual Arts & Art History is committed to building a culturally diverse educational environment. We are seeking faculty who can contribute to the diversity and excellence in our programs and courses through their research, teaching and service.

Further information about the department is available at: https://www.fau.edu/artsandletters/vaah/

The successful candidate will present a strong creative research and exhibition record in a continuing professional trajectory. Teaching is required in both the department’s B.A. and B.F.A. undergraduate programs and the three-year M.F.A. program on a 2/3 annual load. The teaching assignment ranges from foundation courses in 3D Design to Sculpture I and II and topics in the area of specialization. Participation in MFA committees, advising, and supervision of plans of study and other contributions to the department’s M.F.A. program are expected. Facilities management, safety training, and the supervision of graduate teaching and lab assistants are part of the service assignment, which may include related administrative activities, such as the representation of the department and/or the college on university and/or statewide committees.

Minimum Qualifications:

M.F.A. in Sculpture or a related field by the time of appointment; practicing artist with demonstrated creative research and exhibition record that includes interdisciplinary approaches. 2-3 years teaching experience at the university level (beyond that of a teaching assistant) strongly preferred. The candidate’s experience should include technical expertise in all aspects of a sculpture studio operation, including equipment maintenance. In depth, contextual knowledge of historical and contemporary sculpture and related art media expected. The candidate should demonstrate skill in understanding of cultural differences and strive to foster and create educational opportunities where all student populations thrive.
