Assistant Professor of Education: Social Studies

Alma College is accepting applications for an Assistant Professor of Education: Social Studies.

Qualifications: The Department of Education at Alma College, Alma, Michigan invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Social Studies Education. This is a full-time, tenure-track faculty position beginning August 2023.Applicants must have a Ph.D. or Ed.D. prior to the start date. A minimum of 3 years of P-12 teaching experience is required. Experience supervising student teachers is preferred.

Teaching Responsibilities: The department seeks a candidate who will be able to teach courses that include some of the following: PK-6 social studies Methods, 5-12 social studies Methods, geography for teachers, Foundations of Education courses, and supervision of clinical experiences. The successful candidate should have demonstrated excellence in teaching and will engage students in research and academic advising. Typical teaching load is six units per year.

Research and Service Responsibilities: The successful candidate is expected to establish a productive research program and scholarship agenda. Service to the college through committee work and other activities is expected of all tenure-track faculty. External service to the public and to the scientific community are supported.

The Education Department: The Education department at Alma College is committed to the preparation of knowledgeable, competent, and caring education professionals who reflect critically, serve ethically, and lead intentionally in a diverse world. The Alma College teacher education program is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and earned CAEP’s Frank Murray Award for Continuous Improvement in 2019. The majority of our graduates (95%) earn teacher effectiveness scores of Effective or higher in their first year out. We are a small department that works collaboratively to provide rigorous student-centered education in a residential setting with a deep commitment to quality liberal arts education. In addition to the college’s excellent fine arts programs, an active community of local artists has formed music, theatre and art guilds with a loyal regional following. Alma’s Division III Athletics program offers intercollegiate competition in 22 varsity sports.
