The Learning Innovation team, as part of the Academic Programs team at U of T SCS , works to achieve the highest standard of excellence and quality in course design, curriculum, format and instruction. We are responsible for leading the design, development and renewal of leading non-credit, open enrolment courses and certificate programs that align with industry and changes in the workplace. We strive to develop and deliver courses, certificates, and programs that are learner-centric and respond to the unique needs of busy adults seeking to achieve a wide variety of life and learning goals. Furthermore, we are committed to ensuring our instructors provide an environment where theory and practice intersect, and new skills can develop. The Learning Innovation team maximizes innovation and quality in leading the School’s digital learning initiatives and delivery of online learning support services in support of effective teaching and learning.

Your opportunity:

Under the general supervision of the Manager, Learning Innovation and in collaboration with the School’s Program Directors, Curriculum and Academic Administrator, instructors, and course developers/subject matter experts, you advise on the pedagogically andandragogical sound design, development, and evaluation of courses and programs using the School’s instructional design methodology and course delivery infrastructure to ensure learners have access to effective and engaging learning experiences. Youwill provide guidance and support in the development of cross-departmental strategic initiatives. You will stay well-informed of the use of academic and collaborative technologies by drawing upon, leveraging and contributing to the development of understanding and practice in the field through engagement with conferences, workshops, research, events, and other teams across the University as well as facilitating training sessions with staff and instructors on instructional strategies and learning technology innovations.

Must be available to work outside regular University hours as required, to accommodate meetings with course developers /subject matter experts and instructors.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting detailed analysis and evaluation to inform program planning activities
  • Assessing and determining best practices and standards for multiple instructional modalities
  • Developing instructional design plans for use in teaching contexts involving educational technologies
  • Developing and implementing components of instructional programs
  • Creating program and course materials
  • Planning components of projects
  • Fostering stakeholder engagement and maintaining relationships with project partners
  • Advising on best practices and strategies for effective course design

Essential Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree with curriculum focus in educational technology, instructional design, adult learning principles and curriculum development or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience designing, developing, implementing and evaluating technology-mediated courses/programs for adult learners, in a revenue generating academic/ continuing education, professional development and/or learning and development context.
  • Experience in eLearning course design, development, and delivery.
  • Proven work experience with building courses/programs in Canvas or other Learning Management Systems and related software/ communications platforms.
  • Experience coordinating/supporting/planning several projects of varying complexities in a fast-paced environment and with a high degree of initiative, meet deadlines and work well under pressure in a diverse team environment.
  • Experience with coordinating project plans and schedules and providing input on the development of guidelines, proceduresand policies.
  • Experience developing and delivering workshops/training to internal and external stakeholders in an academic setting.
  • Understanding of and experience with AODA Compliance requirements in relation to course/program design, development and delivery.
  • Advanced knowledge in Office 365, specifically PowerPoint, Excel, Visio, Word and Teams.
  • Working knowledge of relational databases (e.g. SharePoint) is preferred.
  • Ability to use tact, discretion, maintain confidentiality, flexibility and sound judgment.
  • Ability to research, identify trends, and best practices in digital learning, and remain well informed of developments in technology.


Assets (Nonessential):

  • Experience in or an understanding of the pedagogy and technology of mobile learning, gamified, social, and/or open learning programs.
  • Experience with web development including working knowledge of HTML.
  • Experience preparing support materials for internal and external users.
