Position OverviewThe Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at the University of Kansas (KU) invites applicants for a full-time, non-tenure track Assistant/Associate Teaching Professor position in the Higher Education Administration program. The successful candidate will teach courses in assessment, program evaluation, and student affairs. Other course options and curricular responsibilities may include courses in higher education law, history of higher education, development of additional electives, and/or development of an undergraduate minor in higher education administration. The successful candidate must have teaching experience in higher education, with a preference for experience with graduate education and the ability to develop in-person, hybrid, and/or online courses.

This is an academic year (9-month) appointment, starting August 18, 2023. The initial appointment will be a 3 year limited term appointment with renewal subject to the successful outcome of a comprehensive review, budget availability, and the best interest of the department, School, and University. An initial determination of rank will be based upon the review of the candidate’s credentials and experience in alignment with expectations for non-tenure/tenure-track positions.

Job Description60% Teaching/Advising
Primary course topics will focus on assessment, program evaluation, student affairs, and potentially other topics such as law and history or higher education. The standard teaching expectation is three 3-credit hour courses per semester or the defined equivalent. All faculty are expected to:
  • Perform as the instructor of record for all assigned courses as designated by the Departmental Chair.
  • Develop assignments, evaluate student work, provide feedback to students, and assign grades.
  • Hold regular office hours for students involved in classes taught. Be available for office hours each week, including reasonable appointments if a student cannot meet during scheduled office hours.
  • Mentor and advise graduate students in independent research projects, particularly dissertations for students in the Ed.D. program, and serve as a member of student dissertation committees.
  • Adhere to the Department, School, and University policies.
20% Program Coordination
  • Serve as the primary coordinator for the Higher Education Administration master's (M.S.E).
  • Develop and implement marketing and recruitment strategies and serve as the primary contact person for prospective students.
  • Assist with curriculum development and assessment.
  • Act as the point of contact for graduate assistantship selection and placement process, including the role of primary liaison with assistantship supervisors.
  • Coordinate orientation sessions and hooding ceremonies.
10% Scholarly Engagement
  • Engage in scholarly activities including but not limited to carrying out course transformation, assessment of learning outcomes, development of pedagogical teaching practices that expand and deliver new methods of teaching to precipitate dynamic learning engagements or other activities to implement innovations in teaching and learning.
  • Scholarly engagement is broadly defined and typically, but not exclusively, includes participation in or presenting professional development and workshops, scholarly presentations at meetings, publications, documenting and disseminating the results of inquiry into improving teaching and learning.
10% Service
  • Teaching faculty members are expected to participate in appropriate professional activities, such as attending faculty meetings, carrying out departmental committee assignments, and attending national and international meetings or conferences. Teaching faculty are full voting members of the department faculty except on personnel matters involving tenure-track faculty.
  • Provide general service to the department, school, university, and discipline.
Required QualificationsFor appointment at the rank of Assistant Teaching Professor:
  1. Ph.D. or Ed.D. in higher education or related field (or earned by start date).
  2. Served as the lead or co-instructor for at least one course in higher education and student affairs (or a university setting).
  3. Experience working with diverse populations, as evidenced by application materials and interviews.

For appointment at the rank of Associate Teaching Professor:
  1. Ph.D. or Ed.D. in higher education or related field
  2. At least 6 years in rank as an Assistant Teaching Professor or equivalent teaching experience in higher education and/or student affairs.
  3. Experience working with diverse populations, as evidenced by application materials and interviews.
Preferred QualificationsFor appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Teaching Professor:
  1. A minimum of 3 years of full-time administrative experience in higher education.
