Job Summary:
The Sport Management Program at the University of San Francisco (ranked 10th in the world by SportBusiness) invites applications for a full-time term position at the Assistant Professor level to begin in the spring of 2023 (or possibly fall of 2023, if need be), contingent upon funding approval.

Full Job Description:

Program: The Sport Management Program is a Master of Science degree program designed to serve the needs of today's working students. The 36-unit/23-month interdisciplinary graduate curriculum is offered at USF's downtown San Francisco campus and at our campus in Orange County, CA. The program serves graduate students interested in advancement and management opportunities in professional sports, intercollegiate and amateur athletics, fitness, sports technology, and the sports marketing, management, and communications firms that service the larger marketplace. The core mission of the program is to develop responsible, ethical, and inclusive leaders for the sport industry, who have the current and future technical and management skills required to build winning sport organizations that benefit society. We are inclusive and responsible in our teaching and scholarship, and promote learning excellence through reasoned discourse in a cohesive, ethical, and communal environment. Please see www.usfca.edu/sm for more information.

The San Francisco and Southern California areas boast a rich market of entertainment and technological enterprises that impact the substantial sports industry in both locations. This provides ample opportunities to be directly involved at the forefront of innovation in the sports industry.

Teaching responsibilities will include the master's level courses in sport marketing and business development and sales, with emphasis on the ways in which anti-racism, social justice, and diversity shape fan and customer behavior, sports branding, integrated communication, and the sales process. Courses are eight weeks long, meeting one evening per week, per cohort. The teaching load is 18 units per year for the term position, which is six 8-week courses per year (a total of 48 class meetings for the year). Sixteen (16) of those class meetings are in Orange County, CA.

Service responsibilities will include providing guidance to the Black Unified Sports Family (BUSF) student and alumni organization, and further developing the diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives of the program, among other responsibilities.

Qualifications include experience in the field of sport; university teaching experience; evidence of a strong commitment to teaching; a graduate degree in Sport Management or related field earned by August 2023; experience and willingness to work in a culturally diverse environment; and an understanding of and commitment to support the mission of the University.

It is necessary for the candidate to have a background in sport marketing and business development and sales. Moreover, candidates should have evidence of excellence in teaching and service. We are particularly interested in candidates who can develop, or have developed, professional relationships in industry, and who have launched or strengthened DEI initiatives within the industry.

We particularly encourage minority and women candidates to apply. Applicants should submit: a letter of application (to include teaching philosophy, and a brief description of sport industry experience), curriculum vitae, graduate transcripts, reprints of any published research or writing, diversity statement (which may include your thoughts and/or experiences concerning equitable education for underserved and marginalized communities, your commitment to or experience with broadening participation and accessibility in the field, and/or experience and success in engaging with BIPOC students), teaching evaluations, and three letters of recommendation (requested upon submission of your application). Any questions can be submitted to: [email protected]. Applications must be received by November 1, 2022, in order to ensure full consideration.

The University of San Francisco is seeking to hire a cohort of new faculty whose scholarship and/or community-engaged research and creative work focuses on the experiences of Black and Latinx communities, or antiracism, diversity, equity and inclusion more generally, and who have proven expertise and experience in mentoring Black, Latinx and underrepresented students.

USF is entering into the second year of a faculty diversity hiring initiative; in the first year, 70% of new full-time faculty hires were faculty of color. Junior BIPoC faculty are invited to participate in mentoring, community building and peer to peer opportunities coordinated by the Vice Provost for Equity, Inclusion and Faculty Excellence. Faculty also enjoy peer support through affinity groups such as the Asian and Asian American Staff/Faculty Council, Black Community Council, LGBTQ Caucus and La Colectiva of Latinx Staff and Faculty.

In addition all new faculty have access to a free membership with the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity and support from the Center for Teaching Excellence and Center for Research, Artistic and Scholarly Excellence.
