The Department of Media, Film and Journalism Studies (MFJS) in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Denver offers students a robust understanding of the role of the media in contemporary society. With its emphasis on developing strong communication skills across various platforms and its grounding in the critical evaluation of media practices, the departments offerings prepare students for the pursuit of excellence in the constantly evolving media, film, strategic communication, and journalism professions. The Department offers undergraduates degrees in film studies and production, journalism studies, media studies, and strategic communication (public relations). At the graduate level, the Department offers a Master of Arts in media and public communication (strategic communication or media and globalization emphasis) and a Master of Arts in international and intercultural communication.

Position Summary

The Department of Media, Film and Journalism Studies invites applications for a one-year Visiting Professor of the Practice in Journalism and Democracy, rank open, for the 2022-2023 academic year beginning Winter 2023. Eligible candidates will have received a Ph.D., M.F.A. or a M.A. and have significant professional journalism experience. The candidate will teach in person sections of the departments journalism courses, including courses such as Storytelling & Reporting, Advanced Storytelling and Reporting, Multimedia Journalism, Infographic Storytelling, or other advanced journalism courses of the candidates design. Candidates should have extensive backgrounds in investigative reporting, watchdog journalism, and be able to demonstrate their professional careers have advanced the role of investigative journalism/watchdog journalism in a democracy. This is a one-time, non-reoccurring appointment.

The successful candidate will teach four face-to-face in person courses during the 2022-2023 academic year. The Visiting Professor of the Practice of Journalism and Democracy will also interact with MFJS undergraduate and graduate students through critiques of student work, guest visits to classes and by serving as a career mentor to students. In addition, the Visiting Professor would be expected to take on significant duties supervising student experiential learning projects involving journalism projects, longform journalism, and investigative journalism.

The successful candidate will also give two public lectures, focusing on the role of journalism in a democracy, and host three workshops open to students, alumni, and practicing journalists focused on investigative reporting techniques, the use of public records in reporting, or on other topics vital to journalisms role in a democracy. They will also interact with university faculty from other disciplines and may guest lecture in other units, as determined by their areas of expertise. The expectation is that the successful candidate would keep their travel to a minimum, spending the bulk of their time in residence at DU working. Visiting professors are considered full-time faculty who are on campus most of the time, attend faculty gatherings, attend University events, and participate in intellectual and social life at DU.

Essential Functions

Teaching journalism courses to undergraduate students

Conducting workshops/master classes with undergraduate and graduate students, alumni, faculty, and local journalists on investigative journalism and the role of journalism in a democracy

Hosting public facing events on the role of journalism in a democracy that will attract a diverse audience in the Denver community

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Mass Communication or related field and significant professional experience, or M.F.A. or MA in journalism or a related field and significant professional journalism experience
  • Evidence of training in and demonstrated capacity for teaching the departments introductory and advanced journalism courses
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience teaching in a media studies/mass communication/film studies department.
  • Prior experience/ability teaching journalism courses
  • Working Environment

    1. Standard office environment.
    2. Unexpected interruptions occur often, and stress level is moderate to high.
    3. Noise level is quiet to moderate.

    Physical Activities

    1. Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period.
    2. Occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs.

    Work Schedule
    University hours of operation are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. The successful candidate will teach four (4) courses over two (2) quarters (Winter and Spring) during the 2022-2023 academic year.

    Salary Grade Number:
    The salary grade for the position is UC.

    Salary Range:
    The salary range for this position is $40,000 - $51,370.

    The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidates sex or any other protected status.
