The Department of History and the Global Irish Studies Initiative at Georgetown University invite applications for a full-time, non-tenure-line position as Assistant Teaching Professor of Irish History and Associate Director of Global Irish Studies. We seek an innovative teacher and scholar of nineteenth- and/or twentieth-century Irish history whose work explores the history of Ireland in global or comparative context. We encourage especially scholars with teaching and research interests in one or more of the following areas: Gender and Sexuality; Race and Ethnicity; Global South Studies; History of Empire; Global History; Environmental Studies; Science and Medicine; History of Capitalism; or History of Religion. The successful candidate will also have experience, appropriate to their career stage, in academic program administration and development. The initial term for this role will be three years.

Position Details:

The Global Irish Studies Initiative at Georgetown University was formed in 2017 with the goal of supporting and developing research and teaching related to Ireland across all of the disciplines and schools of the university. With advisory faculty drawn from the Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences primarily, but also Natural Sciences, Medicine, and Law, the Initiative seeks to support ongoing research activity by students and faculty and foster new interest in the study of Ireland in comparative or global contexts. A central part of the Initiative's mission is to provide a stimulating program of academically informed public events on campus and around the city of Washington, DC. To that end, the Initiative is committed to serving a diverse community, and reflecting the diversity of the island of Ireland.

As Associate Director of Global Irish Studies, the successful candidate will work closely with the Director to plan and execute public programming across multiple disciplines; administer ongoing research support programs and develop new ones; and expand existing relationships with partners, supporters, and donors.

The teaching load for this position is 3-3, but the successful candidate will receive one course release per academic year to allow time for Global Irish Studies Initiative program administration.



Qualifications
Candidates should have a Ph.D. in hand by July 1, 2023. They should also demonstrate a commitment to academic excellence and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). This commitment to DEI can be demonstrated in a number of ways, including through teaching and research on matters related to DEI or through service that has fostered DEI in a university community.
