The Research Computing Center at Florida State University enables research and education by maintaining a diverse campus cyberinfrastructure and by providing training opportunities and dedicated consulting for all faculty, staff, and students.

Responsibilities The system administrator will support the computational research for a diverse set of research areas, including bioinformatics, economics, meteorology, materials science, molecular biophysics, computer visualizations, and others. This support will include writing scripts, modifying source codes, installing software, and developing databases.

Mentor and train student workers assigned to system administration tasks.

Work cooperatively on a wide range of technical issues from systems planning to support for advanced computational research. Systems planning may include issues such as researching the best and most practical solutions and requesting proposals for hardware and software solutions. Assist in the management of the operation of all computer facilities in the organization.

Required to troubleshoot hardware and network problems. Required to operate in a relatively independent and proactive style to solve a wide range of technical problems, including diagnosing computer hardware failures.

Performs duties in compliance with ITS policies, guidelines, and processes pertaining to support requests, work orders, project management, change management, and incident management. Appropriately utilizes associated tools in accordance with ITS standards.

Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree and two years' experience or a high school diploma or equivalent and six years of experience (Note: or a post high school education and experience equal to six years)

Ability to conceptualize and implement ways to improve the organization by taking risks to enhance the speed and organizational ability to adapt, change and create.

Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, equipment diagrams, and specifications.

Knowledge of computer operations, functions, and related peripherals

Knowledge of standard concepts, practices, and procedures for computer support.

Knowledge of standard programming languages, concepts, practices, and procedures within the technology field.

Ability to perform assigned responsibilities with minimal to moderate supervision.

Knowledge of information technology security measures.

Preferred Qualifications Advanced system administrator experience with the Linux operating system.

Experience with automated configuration tools like puppet.

Experience with software deployment through software like Foreman, Katello, or RHEL Satellite.

Experience with working in a team.

The Research Computing Center (RCC) at FSU is a unit housed in the Information Technology Services department on FSU's beautiful campus. We manage several research technologies, including large file systems and compute clusters.

The RCC System's team oversees the operation and maintenance of those systems. In addition, it is responsible for the software deployment on our HPC cluster as well as monitoring critical system functions. Also, the system's team supports the Application Team with troubleshooting scientific applications. This position will be part of the system's team and focus on managing our Katello environment. Also, this position will be responsible for the RCC data transfer nodes, including management of the Globus/GridFTP software.

RCC is a small and diverse team. We believe that collaboration, not competition, is the key to each other's success.
