Please note this is a hybrid role within the MGH Institute of Health Professions based in the Charlestown Navy Yard. This position is a hybrid schedule with the expectation that the Senior Accountant be onsite on Wednesdays and be remote the rest of the week. 

JOB SUMMARY:

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Accounting and Reporting, the Senior Accountant’s responsibilities include, but not limited to, maintaining financial records and reports, supporting monthly close process, performing general ledger reconciliations, participating in year-end audits and assisting Director of Accounting and Reporting as needed and respond to ad hoc requests by management and department. 

The position requires understating of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), strong analytical skills, attention to detail, ability to work independently to complete regular and ad-hoc assignments and excellent communication, organizational skills.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop in depth knowledge related to the Institute’s accounting structure and systems, including both income statement and balance sheet accounts.  Reconcile all balance sheet and revenue and expense accounts, including Student Accounts Receivable accurately and within time sensitive deadlines.  Responsible for monthly upload of balance sheet reconciliations to MGB account reconciliation software.
  • During the financial close, prepare journal entries to properly record financial transactions and update monthly close package within time sensitive deadlines. 
  • Performs monthly review and analysis of actual/budget variances and effectively communicate and present issues to Director of Accounting and Reporting.
  • Serves as back up support for cash management including reviewing bank activity, entering deposits, and reviewing and releasing batches in a timely manner.
  • Prepare external financial reports, including but not limited to MGH Institute Annual Report, Annual IPEDS Survey (Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System), Nurse Faculty Loan Program Annual Report (NFLP), and New England Commission on Higher Education (NECHE) Annual Reporting.
  • Working closely with the Director of Accounting and Reporting to update accounting policies and procedures and ensure that policies and procedures are complete and accurate on the Institute’s intranet.
  • Promote a customer service environment, including providing support to multiple constituents including faculty, staff, and students.
  • Develop and prepare a variety of regular and ad hoc reporting analyses and projects for issues related to management inquiries for assets, liabilities, revenue and expenses, all performed within time sensitive deadlines and with a high degree of attention to detail.
  • Assist the Director of Accounting and Reporting and AVP for Financial Services during Workday implementation process.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Accounting with 2 years related experience (required)  
  • A self-motivated and flexible team player 
  • Direct experience with higher education or Fund Accounting preferred.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills; excellent interpersonal skills, including strong customer service orientation.
  • A solid foundation in general accounting concepts.
  • Must be self-motivated, resourceful, and able to take initiative.
  • An ability to work effectively as member of team.
  • Able to manage deliverables through hybrid working environment.
  • Must have strong strategic and analytical ability.
  • Strong computer skills and advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
  • Knowledge of PeopleSoft Financial System or Workday is desirable. 
  • Knowledge of database programs such as Colleague is a plus.
  • General aptitude of technology and ability to work remotely in a self-sufficient and efficient manner
