Organizational Unit Overview:

Through collaboration, the division provides programs and services that are grounded in theory, assessment, and sound practice.
The East Carolina University (ECU) Financial Wellness Center (FWH) provides comprehensive financial education, financial coaching, and financial resources that empower students to make better decisions, to cultivate better relationships, and to build better communities. This support allows our students to leave us with increased knowledge, better decision-making skills, increased confidence, and real action plans that support current and future financial wellness. As the inaugural Director, this hard working, enthusiastic, and experienced leader to help ECU achieve its goal of student success as measured by improvements in student understanding of personal financial issues, including budgeting/financial planning, credit management, debt reduction and attainment of financial stability.

Job Duties :

The Director reports to the Director of ECU Student Centers. The scope of the position extends from the Division of Student Affairs to the entire University community.

The Director will work collaboratively with various cross-divisional staffs to design, implement, and assess financial literacy programs and financial planning services for current ECU students. Through advising, outreach, and on-campus programming, the Director will raise awareness of financial literacy, student aid programs, scholarships, career paths, and long-term financial obligations.

Specific Job Assignments: The Director is responsible for providing direct oversight for planning, organizing, and solution implementation and developing timelines and identifying resources to advise, develop, and implement solutions in the following areas:

Supervision & Administrative:
• Hire, supervise and train graduate assistant staff and student workers.
• Ensure the student staff develops and maintains effective relationships with student groups, both those formally affiliated with the office and those informally affiliated with the office such as student affairs offices, academic departments, student groups, student government and community organizations.
• Lead, coach, and develop a high performing student team.
• Research, design and implement the financial literacy program based on best practices that help to educate students and to minimize financial issues impacting retention and improving financial solvency and stability.
• Manage the day to day operations of the FWH and its mission to support student success by providing students accessible and relevant financial education.
• Analyze qualitative and quantitative data to evaluate effectiveness of FWC programming and prepare regular internal and external reports. Actively participate in the assessment and continuous improvement of the program.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality of student information and work-related information.
• Additional duties as assigned

Student Development and Support:
• Create an operational plan which incorporates goals and objectives that work towards the strategic direction of the department.
• Develop and oversee learning opportunities that encourage student involvement with financial literacy programs and services.
• Provide opportunities and program support as well as personal financial coaching services for undergraduate and graduate students.
• Conducts ongoing evaluation of services and student needs and stay current on best practices in the field to inform program development.
• Create inspiring and effective student-led mentoring/coaching relationships.
• Serve as primary coaching specialist for all students and oversee the planning, implementation, and evaluation of coaching services.
• Provide one-on-one financial counseling to students and conducts student workshops.
• Develop customized financial plans for new students in support of timely degree completion.
• Develop financial workshops and programs for face-to-face and online audiences in an individual and group setting.

Outreach & Campus Collaboration:
• Develop partnerships across both campuses including but not limited to Academic Affairs, Health Sciences, Administration and Finance, Academic Advisers, Continuing Studies, College Deans/Directors, Faculty Senate, Staff Senate, Financial Aid, Student Accounts, ECU Libraries, University Scholarships, Athletics, COAD, and Parent and Family Programs to deliver financial education and financial guidance at key points in students’ academic careers.
• Collaborate with faculty to develop, implement and assess leadership and experiential learning opportunities.
• Encourage partnerships for events and programs sponsored by other student groups or university departments and promote FWH by providing leadership, visibility, and program sponsorships.
• Identify and lead collaborations with internal and external partners, including assisting with writing grant proposals which enhance and expand students’ access to financial literacy education and increases student financial wellness.
• Create community outreach programs that provide financial wellness opportunities for prospective ECU students currently enrolled in K-12 schools as well as explore partnerships with ECU’s Community School and Early College High School to provide financial literacy programs.

Minimum Education/Experience :

• Master’s degree in a relevant discipline plus three (3) years of related experience or a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline plus five (5) years of related experience in working with students in financial aid, financial planning, financial literacy, or business/billing settings.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation :

N/A

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education :

• CFP (Certified Financial Planner) or AFC (Accredited Financial Counselor) designation or equivalent or obtain certification within six months of hire date.
• Documented experience in student program development for a variety of student populations, including underrepresented students, first generations students, etc.
• Demonstrated leadership in an educational setting.
- Excellent communication, problem-solving, and presentation skills.
• Ability to effectively communicate financial literacy and planning strategies to students, parents, and external constituents.
• Demonstrated computer skills
• Able to work collaboratively with faculty, staff and external constituents in program development.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and develop collaborative relationships with colleagues in support of student success.
• Proven track record in helping students achieve their educational goals and ability to proactively respond to student concerns.
