Position Summary:

The primary location of this position is on the main Cullowhee, NC campus.

The Medical Assistant is responsible for assisting throughout health services to aid patient care and business operations. This position will primarily provide direct patient care assisting the laboratory staff with specimen collection and lab testing. This position must be able to independently function in the laboratory, including performing quality assurance checks and instrumental startup. The medical assistant will also be responsible for patient follow up for referrals to external services through referral management and will be responsible for orders follow up, including medication refills, pharmacy reconciliation and coordination of results that providers are waiting on for patient care. The medical assistant will on occasion screen patients during intake and assessment, document chief complaint, obtain vital signs to include height and weight, and assist the provider with minor procedures as needed. This position will also provide assistance to the front office staff, scheduling appointments, and discharging patients. The medical assistant may help perform duties in the allergy/immunization clinic. The medical assistant should have a broad knowledge of all operational aspects of a primary care/urgent care practice.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position:

This position will have a demonstrated knowledge of laboratory procedure, including specimen collection, documentation, and performing lab testing. Implementing nursing assistance in preparing patients at check in for general clinic visits as well as assist providers in carrying out treatment plans . The medical assistant will have necessary skills to efficiently operate in the business office of a medical practice, including knowledge of scheduling, immunization requirements, patient charges and payment collections, and discharge process. Knowledge of requirements for pre-certification for 3rd party insurances and diagnostic testing and referrals.

Minimum Qualifications:

Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require registration as a Nurse Aide by the North Carolina Board of Nursing or certification through the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA.)
