Job Summary/Basic Function:

The Department of Chemistry at Millersville University welcomes applications for a Tenure Track Assistant Professor position in Organic Chemistry beginning August 2023.

The Millersville Chemistry Program is ACS-approved and offers a range of undergraduate chemistry programs. Primary teaching responsibilities include lectures, recitations, and laboratories in organic chemistry and introductory chemistry. Courses to support other degree programs or the University’s General Education program may also be assigned. Classes should be conducted through multifaceted teaching strategies for face-to-face classroom delivery, web-enhanced, and/or web-based formats, as appropriate. Faculty have further responsibilities in student advisement and mentoring, curriculum development, course and program learning outcome assessment, and service that supports the work of the department, college, university, and/or discipline.

The successful candidate will be expected to establish an active undergraduate research program in organic chemistry. Scholarly projects from the classroom and/or research lab should support peer-reviewed outputs and include students, as relevant. The ability to teach chemistry at the undergraduate level is required and must be addressed in at least two letters of reference. Commitment to excellence in teaching and research at the undergraduate level with students from diverse backgrounds is essential. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills and a successful in-person interview and teaching demonstration are required.

  • A one-page Teaching Philosophy that includes the applicant’s commitment to inclusive and equitable learning and to working with diverse populations of students.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, or a closely related field, completed by the time of appointment and an undergraduate degree in chemistry.
  • Research experience and graduate coursework in organic chemistry.
  • Ability to teach undergraduate-level organic chemistry and introductory chemistry addressed in at least two letters of reference.
  • Ability to establish an active undergraduate research program in organic chemistry.
  • Commitment to excellence in teaching, mentoring, and research at the undergraduate level.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives and work with students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Successful interview, on-campus teaching demonstration, and presentation of proposed research agenda.
  • Successful completion of three background checks.

Job Description:

TEACHING AND PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:Effectively teach students both in assigned courses and outside-the-classroom settings (e.g., student research, service learning, field activities, and placements), advise students, and carry out other assigned professional responsibilities in support of student learning and success. The academic-year workload for full-time faculty is 24 workload hours (typically, each lecture counts as 3 hours and each laboratory section counts as 3 hours) and faculty must hold a minimum of five office hours per week on no fewer than three different days. Primary teaching responsibility is major and/or non-major courses (lectures, recitations, and laboratories) in Chemistry as well as in their area of specialization. Establish an active research program that involves undergraduate students. Candidates must be willing to teach day, evening and/or weekend classes and conduct classes through multifaceted teaching strategies for face-to-face classroom delivery (taught at Millersville University or off-site locations such as at the Ware Center) and/or web-enhanced or web-based formats. All members of the faculty also have the responsibility to accept those reasonable duties assigned to them within their fields of competence. Faculty are expected, per Collective Bargaining Agreement Article 4, to engage in professional responsibilities such as curriculum development and update; learning outcomes assessment for courses and programs; and participating in department, college and university meetings and workshops. DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION:
The Millersville University Chemistry program is ACS-approved. The department has 10 faculty and approximately 100 undergraduate majors enrolled in chemistry programs, including biochemistry, environmental, polymer, secondary education, and nanotechnology options. Undergraduate education at Millersville is student-focused and includes a required research experience for all chemistry majors. Each faculty member has an individual research space, and student participation in peer-reviewed research is encouraged. The Chemistry Department maintains a wide range of instrumentation used for instructional labs as well as research endeavors.

Essential Functions:

  • Teach courses (lectures, recitations, and laboratories) in introductory and/or organic chemistry as well as non-majors courses.
  • Prepare course syllabi, lesson plans, instructional materials, and assessment instruments.
  • Establish an active research program in organic chemistry that involves undergraduate students.
  • Foster student learning and professional development.
  • Promote safety and chemical hygiene in the laboratories.
  • Participate in maintaining departmental instrumentation.
  • Contribute the maintaining department/program assessment and accreditation.
  • Teach day and evening classes as scheduled using appropriate modes of educational delivery.
  • Actual assignments and additional duties will depend upon department needs.
